    3dfx Voodoo5 6000 First Aircooler Edition

This is freaking awesome. So many people in this thread completely miss the point. This is what being an enthusiast is all about. Nice work OP, looks fantastic!

    Waiting for Haswell?

That bites. It's taking a little bit of excitement out of me. I'm not a watercooler and never will be, just not [H] enough I guess. If this thing runs super hot on air I'll just go with a 3770K and be done with it. I will wait and see though, like you said, need some trusted reviews.

    8000 series speculation thread.

Probably better off waiting for 20nm. These mid gen refreshes typically don't add a whole lot of performance. My 7870 should hold me over until then.

    Kyle's got Haswell...

I just sold my my i7 920 and mobo in anticipation. I figure if haswell is great, I'll buy it. If not, then I'll pick up a cheap 3770 from somewhere. Either way, I can't wait. This is my first new build since 2009, i've got the itch bad.

    AMD refresh Volcanic Islands

This is the main reason I bought a 7870 for a $199 back in January. It will hold me over until 20nm parts come. If those specs are legit, then sign me up fro an 8970 come Christmas time.

    Radeon 6870, 74C idle

Arctic silver will work fine, some will complain that it's conductive material, but as long as you aren't glopping it all over it's perfectly fine. The process is about the same as doing a cpu. Most gpu's have 4 screws securing the heatsink to the card. Take those screws out, lift up and it...

which c2q to look at to replace my 3.6ghz e6700 on the super cheap

Definitely go Q9450 or 9550. Q6600 should only be bought if you can get a killer, too good to pass up kind of deal. It likely won't overclock as well and uses more power.

    Radeon 6870, 74C idle

Definitely sounds like bad TIM. Even in 90+ ambient temps it shouldn't idle that high. My 6850 in 90+ ambient would still idle in the 40s and 50's

When can we expect a HD7970 price drop?

I for one wouldn't mind a crap ton of used 7970's hitting the market. I wouldn't mind upgrading to one on the cheap. I like my 7870, but if I can pick up a 7970 on the cheap, I will.

    Waiting for Haswell?

I'm pretty sure you will see a massive difference.

Can't really get into Bioshock 1, anyone care to explain?

The story in Bioshock is fine, it's the complete and total lack of challenge on any difficulty level that makes the game a bore. A veteran FPS player will crush that game.

    Waiting for Haswell?

I highly doubt anyone will be hitting 6ghz on these things with typical air and water coolers, maaaybe, but I doubt it. I would be perfectly happy with 5ghz, coming from a 3.6 920.

my 7870 is getting really loud when i load a game

I'm going to agree with the ambient temps theory. Over the winter, my 7870 idled at 28-29c or so, and loaded at 68-69c. Now with spring time ambient temps it's idling around 32-34 and loading at 72c. Ambient temps always effect cards especially if it's a single fan reference type. Get a dual...

Haswell leaking pricing and model info.

Looks like a 4670k would be a nice upgrade from my 920. If I recall I paid about $200 or so for the 920 from microcenter.

    getting into bitcoining?

Just looking around various forums, it seem like hash rates can vary wildly across identical hardware when mining LTC, it's more than a bit frustrating. I too went back to BTC for that reason. I can also use my computer when doing BTC. With LTC the computer is all but unusable if you are using a...
