I would recommend gentoo for exactly the reason that many people don't: it has no installer. Instead, it has a bunch of very thourough and helpful documentation that will help you through your install. By doing the install manually you will learn a lot (although it's a bit tedious).

It wouldn't start the boot process. The fans would start spinning and the monitor would flicker for a second but it would just beep and not do anything.
