Looks like this will have to wait for FreeNAS 10. Although I'm mostly using linux LXC containers on Proxmox but I would switch if it would fix the problems here.
I've just set up a new Lenovo TS140 server with an M1015 flashed into IT mode. The M1015 is passed through to the FreeNAS 9.10 VM. Things appeared to be working but I'm getting CKSUM errors and permanent file errors, see below. The zpool has 2 8tb Seagate archive HDDs in a mirror.

We need more info on how much storage you will have, will you have compression, deduplication, encryption? How fast transfer speeds do you need, gigabit, 10gigabit? How many concurrent users? Are you storing large media...
I have a single drive rpool on my solaris NAS and I've had a mirror on an other SSD but it just died and I'm trying to replace it with a 60gig mechanical 2.5" drive that I have on hand but I'm getting errors.
I used format -> fdisk to format/partition the drive
then I tried
prtvtoc...
If you use e-sata then I would assume the chipset in the enclosure doesn't matter. Just get anything that passes through the esata, really you dont even need an enclosure except to power the drive.
