You mean run FreeNAS bare metal on the machine? I could do that but I would prefer to be able to use the machine to run multiple things.

What does the softraid controller have to do with a ZFS implementation? We need more info on how much storage you will have, will you have compression, deduplication, encryption? How fast transfer speeds do you need, gigabit, 10gigabit? How many concurrent users? Are you storing large media...

If you use e-sata then I would assume the chipset in the enclosure doesn't matter. Just get anything that passes through the esata, really you dont even need an enclosure except to power the drive.

If its not under warranty many surge protectors/UPS offer insurance for damaged equipment.

100% SSD, 10k drives are slower, noisier and expensive.

I use the monitor and I installed no drivers... worked fine out of the box.
