Looks like this will have to wait for FreeNAS 10. Although I'm mostly using linux LXC containers on Proxmox but I would switch if it would fix the problems here.
I've just set up a new Lenovo TS140 server with an M1015 flashed into IT mode. The M1015 is passed through to the FreeNAS 9.10 VM. Things appeared to be working but I'm getting CKSUM errors and permanent file errors, see below. The zpool has 2 8tb Seagate archive HDDs in a mirror.

mobo and chip sold.
I've also got a Scythe Big Shuriken upgraded with a full thickness Nexus PWM fan that I used for this system for $25 shipped, I've got the original low-profile sycthe fan if you want that instead subtract $5.

What does the softraid controller have to do with a ZFS implementation?
We need more info on how much storage you will have, will you have compression, deduplication, encryption? How fast transfer speeds do you need, gigabit, 10gigabit? How many concurrent users? Are you storing large media...
I have a single drive rpool on my solaris NAS and I've had a mirror on an other SSD but it just died and I'm trying to replace it with a 60gig mechanical 2.5" drive that I have on hand but I'm getting errors.
I used format -> fdisk to format/partition the drive
then I tried

If you use e-sata then I would assume the chipset in the enclosure doesn't matter. Just get anything that passes through the esata, really you dont even need an enclosure except to power the drive.
S3 is just too expensive for simple backup esspecially for home use in my opinion. I use crashplan instead.
What about google cloud storage (https://cloud.google.com/products/cloud-storage.html).
Old laptops are great I use one with Ubuntu to share printers with Airprint for ipad support.
Personally, I would set up the machine to copy an image of itself over to a remote share on NAS (assuming you have some sort of network storage available). I'm not sure how to image a linux machine...
What about a USB->IDE adapter, just attach it to one of the internal USB headers. I'm pretty sure these are compatible with CD drives but I've never done it.
you can use zfs send and receive instead of dd, these can be sent over the network via ssh or netcat but it would be faster to attach the drives locally.
I have a 2011 MBA and I've been waiting since I got it for a Thunderbolt->gigabit ethernet adapter so I can connect to my network.
It was finally released and I ordered it but the software update which provides drivers was causing kernel panics so it was pulled and now there is no support for...
I built the system pretty much as listed above, it works great! Thanks for all the advice everyone.

Going to be building a new dual E5 Xeon rig (E5-2640 most likely), probably with a SUPERMICRO X9DAi.
I was hoping to get some recommendations for some good extended ATX cases.
Are the Antec Performance One Series P193 V3 and Lian Li PC-A70F big enough and decent?
I don't need an...
People are using them probably, who would upgrade a 1 or 2 year old 256gig SSD, the increased performance would be unnoticeable and the cost would be quite high. Probably need to wait a few years.

didn't see the need for an external connector:

Although this is commonly said and even some of the intel documentation states this there are numerous reports where ECC does in fact run on consumer level i3 processors and maybe some pentiums?
If you are running and all in one, keep applications on separate VMs this makes everything independent. You can easily upgrade to new hardware and easily backup the VMs.
If you put everything on the OI VM you lose the advantages of virtualization, it can be done but why not use some VMs, linux...
If you are running an all in one it might make more sense to leave the OI VM that controls the storage array as minimal as possible. Set up a another VM (ubuntu would probably be easiest) where you run SAB/Sickbeard/etc.
Personally, I find little need for VMs so I run bare metal Solaris and I...
I put all my data (250gb) on my work computer in the exact same directory tree, backed it all up to crash plan in a few days from my office. Then "adopted" the computer on crashplan with my solaris fileserver at home with the sames file/directory tree. Got my initial backup done quickly and...
I was wondering how people have felt the network performance is on the ASRock Z77E-ITX with the Broadcom chip. Before with a Realtek 8111E, I was easily getting 125 mbps on gigabit ethernet to my NAS but now I get 85-90 mbps.
Here are my iperf results (Win7 x64 w/ Broadcom chip on the ASRock to...
