Maybe I *like* my S939!
Actually I'm hoping to get another 8 months or so out of this thing (4600+/2GB/7900GT) and then go Nehalem or whatever AMD's 45nm shrink is going to be.
BTW, kudos to whoever dug this thread back up. I've got a post somewhere up towards the beginning of it, I...
You're right that basically any distro will work as a LAMP server. I've never tried it, but Ubuntu Server has a feature that allows you to install a default Apache/MySQL/PHP setup. A quick Google turned up this link:

I almost forgot -- you can also telnet to the network console port, assuming you know the IP address. But, I assume that would be more difficult than if you had a serial cable lying around.
Any chance you have a serial terminal/cable you can hook up to it? That way you could access the Guardian Service Processor (GSP) console. You'd also need to know the GSP password for the Admin user. There are ways to reset the password, but you'd need access to the HP manuals for that (or...
If you're worried about encryption, OpenLDAP provides NIS compatibility (authentication, groups, NIS netgroups, etc) along with TLS encryption. There are a ton of different security options, depending on your needs and how much time you're willing to spend learning and setting it up. I've found...
I don't think this has been mentioned in the thread yet, but the article said that users will have a chance to purchase support from Canonical. I didn't see anything concrete on support directly from Dell. It will be interesting to see if outsourced support from Canonical can really be useful...
6.06 LTS is a good idea, especially since it's the install that Canonical is committed to supporting for 3 years (I think it's 3 years). Most of the documentation you find will probably work for that version.
I dunno how much help I'll be, but I'll try to take your questions one at a time:
I've played around with it a bit, but I've never tried to do anything with it really, beyond installing and testing Apache and PostgreSQL. It's probably going to act a lot like Debian, but with more options to...
Well, after poking around a bit more in the docs, I think I've found what I'm after (the wonders of actually RTFM). The documentation feels like it's a bit disorganized, but maybe that's just me. Very detailed once you find what you're after, though. If I run into any specific problems I will be...
I've been looking into setting up Apache on FreeBSD, and so I've been looking around some books and online docs, and the same question keeps coming to mind.
From the FreeBSD Handbook:
Is there any particular reason for the FreeBSD Project's preference for Apache 1.3.X? Is it licensing...
For an easy way to get your .mp3 playback working (among many other things), you should give Automatix2 a try. It's a script that will download any given selection of programs to install, most of them non-free multimedia codecs or plugins, such as Flash 9 and windows video codecs, and of course...
