I live where the electric base-line was calculated using natural gas for heating and cooking, so only general electric lighting was included in the base-line.
My electricity rates go up quickly once I add anything more than one television and general lighting.
I was given a PowerEdge 1850 two...
Prices are dropping - one more week and my budget of $160 may get me a new SSD instead of used.
Microcenter has these in local store at:
Samsung 830 256gb $219
Crucial M4 256gb $190
SanDisk Extreme 240gb $180
wish I could've found a used 830 for $160 tho, guess...
I've read some horror stories,
Good to note the need for Sandy Bridge instead of the newer V2
some boards are supposed to be firmware upgradable, but you need an older 1155 cpu (understand some celerons but don't know) to complete the bios upgrade (or get it to post so you can do the upgrade)...
superbiiz $60 (1x8gb ecc unbuffered 1333), supposed to be a shopping link on this site, but I peeked on superbiiz, and they do have something for that price. (didn't look far enough to see timings.)
I believe the difference in power consumption between Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge is an extra...
I just noticed 3 open box 1155 server boards on Newegg (7:45pm PST, wed.) for under a hundred - one's got a management module (X9SCM-F-O $78.)
and a member named Peanuthead has an E3-1230 for $200 - that would help reduce the off-set in cost of the ECC Unbuffered ($349 for 32GB kit on newegg...
I noticed three open box 1155 SERVER boards under a hundred bucks
pros: server board under $100 (E3-12xx)
cons: 1155 End Of Life, ECC Unbuffered ($84/8GBx4=32GB), sandy bridge
X9SCM-F-O $78. woo!
if you did as much reading as I have you'd go Sandy Bridge in an LGA 1155 server board, and end up spending $84 each for four sticks of memory (I could only afford two).
If I wasn't so anal about server memory I'd have saved a bundle.
but, and I wanted to go Opteron, counted on the cost...
zero client and leave it at home?
don't think you can get around the need for a server board and cpu, you'd look so 90's carrying around a LAN party PC with the big plastic handle on top - I think that's what you'd need tho, and who cares how it looks carrying it when you're only concerned...
there's a conversation near the bottom of this page that may relate to what you want:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/VMWare/Q_26548655.html
some of the options they toss around are Nagios and Zenoss appliances in the VMware appliance center
and this one, but it doesn't do...
gabi_cavaller, I've PM'd you links
peanuthead, thanks, wish I could tonight, have to wait 'till friday. Not really rockin' yet, so still unsure where things will bottle-neck. People scare me with stuff like needing 8GB for SQL and another 8GB for sharepoint, so am expecting memory may be more...
working today, built 3 days ago...had my Win7 NIC set to slower xfer rate and uploads into ESXi failed at 1%, anyway...
$119 Intel S1200BTS mATX server board, only one NIC to ESXi, LGA1155, C-203, 1 x16 PCIe 2.0, 1 x8, 1 x4; 1 PCI
$244 Intel E3-1230 Sandy Bridge, 3.2 Ghz, LGA1155...
I am such a noob.
Converter failed at 1% sixteen times, each after making one change and checking logs around the point of failure, Googling, learning and trying something new.
...nothing would allow an upload of more than a few kilobytes, alternately erroring with encountered I/O error and...
I am scared of the Blue Screen of Death if I go that route, though it'd sure be cheaper, and more in-line with a normal home-lab...I think of my upcoming build as more of an Enterprise Home-lab (but maybe I'm just anal), since I'll have a SharePoint 2010, SQL & a DC, plus others asap when i get...
