I had no issues whatsoever redeeming my key, although I did it 4 or so days ago when there wouldn't be as many doing it. I'd suggest you give them a call and try the phone support (no idea how good it is, might be overloaded) or at least try and get a hold of them at the support email.

Just take the taxi out of Anchorhead and then you can. Also it makes sense that a sandstorm on Tatooine would stop you from going somewhere, so it's not like "OMG THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN". Chances are they did that to keep Empire out of the Republic city, and Republic out of the Empire city...
