It's using a custom CUDA program, according to Mark and Brent's benchmarks of the game. No PhysX used.

    Marvel Vs Capcom 3 confirmed

Fighting games have been like that from the beginning. Why do you think combos came about? Because you could cancel certain moves at certain frames into other moves. The only reason frame data seems like a recent development is because the Internet has allowed strategies involving it to be...

    New 5870-terrible performance in AVP

You may want to take a look at the test system Mark and Brent used. The processor being an overclocked i7 probably has something to do with their much faster framerates. The use of overclocked high-end processors in test systems is something that really bugs me about most video card reviews and...

Use Nvidia card for Physx for actual graphic enhancements?

A secondary nVidia card will not do any CUDA effects. It will accelerate PhysX, and only PhysX - if you want the CUDA effects, your primary card has to be nVidia as well.

5870 user - actual PhysX card or low end Nvidia?

This post recommends a 9800GTX or GTX 260 as a PhysX card for a 5850, to prevent the PhysX calculations from bottlenecking the video card. I imagine it wouldn't be much different for a 5870.

    1680x1050 - Minimum needed?

From a 2D perspective like your desktop or in productivity apps, yes, you lose vertical viewing space. But as you pointed out earlier, in a 3D game, 16:9 FOVs lets you see more horizontally, which can be advantageous in an FPS. It's all dependent on the needs of the viewer, I guess.
