ESXi 5.1 whitebox questions, specs, etc

Running OS X on an AMD machine is quite a bit more complicated: you'll have to find a pre-installed image/distribution that's been hacked to run on AMD, rather than just running a vanilla install.

    PCI-E x16 Graphics Card in PCI-E x8 slot with Radeon HD 4350 / ESXi 5 Passthrough

I still haven't heard of anyone who has gotten this running on a Intel C20x-based board. I have an ASUS P8B-E (C204) and a Radeon 5450, and haven't been able to get passthrough working correctly with any OS (Win7, Linux fglrx or radeon). Win7 either blue screens or (when the VMware SVGA driver...

About to do "zpool create raidz" on 6x WD20EARX drives. Any last words from anyone?

Solarismen hosts binary-patched versions of Solaris 'zpool' where ashift is hardcoded to 12. Download the binary and use it to create your pool. The Solaris 11 EA (snv_173) version should work.

IKVM with PCI-E graphics card installed.

The PCI/PEG setting in the BIOS should control this. That's how it works on my ASUS P8B-E: choose PCI, and the local console always gets routed to the Aspeed VGA. Choose PEG, and local console goes to a PCI-e video card if one is installed. If the PCI/PEG setting isn't working, report it to...

    vSphere 5 GA

Download links via lamw on twitter: ESXi 5 Installable vCenter Server 5 and modules I'm just looking for the free ESXi, so my account isn't authorized for either of them. Hopefully the free ESXi download links will be up within a few hours.

New Build: ESXi / Solaris 11 Express /w Raw Drive Mapping (RDM) passthrough

Great, thanks for giving it a try. I found a guy on the VMware forum who got a Radeon 3450 (and also a 6850) running passed-through to a Windows 7 x64 VM. The only weird catch is that the VM's RAM allocation has to be below 2816 MB, or it would BSOD. Not sure why it worked for him and didn't...

New Build: ESXi / Solaris 11 Express /w Raw Drive Mapping (RDM) passthrough

Have you tried running the P8B WS with a PCIe video card? I'm curious if the BIOS and ESXi will still output through the onboard processor video or go through the PCIe card, and if there's a BIOS option to control this. The reason I ask is because I've also been thinking about using the P8B...

XFX 8800 gt in stock 250$

Got in on this: $274 with CA tax, though 2% fatcash will help a little. Now, just have to decide whether to cancel the MSI card from Dell or not.

    Damaged Heatspreader on X2

Thanks for the replies--it didn't seem to me that this could be normal, since I can't see anything similar in the few pictures I have of my 3200+. I'll give it a try tonight.

    Damaged Heatspreader on X2

I bought an OEM X2 4400 from a favorite online store, and it looks like it's ben used or damaged somehow. Every side (except the top) is scratched or glazed like the picture shows--when I slide a knife over that area, it is bumpy. I really don't know how any heatsink could scratch the heat...
