Are you using the latest version of Xfire? On their website it says that it's Vista compatible, but if you're using the latest version and it's asking for elevated privileges to run (that's why UAC's blocking it at startup) then you should tell the Xfire people to get their act together and...
Right-click on the Sidebar icon in the system tray and choose 'Properties'. You should see a 'Restore gadgets installed with Windows' button in the maintenance section.
I haven't seen any tweaks for getting rid of that (other than reducing the window border) but you could patch your uxtheme.dll and use an an entirely new theme if you're feeling kinky.
This problem (for me) was caused by 3rd-party DVD drive firmware. If you have unofficial firmware on your drive change back to the manufacturers firmware and see if the problem goes away.

I am! :) I'm just curious to find out the reason why Vista isn't allowing me to play copy-protected DVDs, whereas other people are having no trouble whatsoever.
Same here; I can play DVDs with VLC, but I can't play any in WMP/WMC. Have you found a resolution to this yet Solar? I think I might go and trawl the Vista/WMP support newsgroups to see if anyone has any info on this issue.
