Thanks BigJ. DDR1000 means I can use a FSB up to 500MHZ and be within spec, correct?
About my choice in motherboards.
Since this isn't a high-end system, I figure that the option to use DDR3 (on the Gigabyte) is kind of pointless, because it will be upgrade time by then.
My current...
Haven't built a system for a few years and have fallen a little behind.
Old system:
Opteron 165 at 2250 MHZ
G.SKILL DDR400
Geforce 7900GS (PCIe)
Abit KN8-SLI
2 hard-drives (IBM 40GB that is 5+ years old and a WD160GB, both PATA)
Dual-Layer DVD+RW
Ultra 500W PS
Here is what I am...

Update - tried 1.49 volts, but that wouldn't get me to 2500 MHZ. Prime would fail almost immediately. At 1.49V and 2450MHZ it would prime for at least a minute, but temps were getting close to 50 degrees. Since the gain is so little, I dropped it back to 2250 @1.35V and am letting it prime away...
I think he is talking about DEP (Data Execution Prevention):

No plans right now, but I just built this system two weeks ago to replace my 4 year old AXP 2500+ rig. Computers seem to be lasting much longer these days, although I did upgrade video cards a couple of times during that period. It used to be that a 1 year old processor was obsolete and...
young-blood, I thought you were looking for everyone else's temps.
Here are mine, all monitored using the Abit onboard sensors. Don't have an external heat monitor, and I am aware MB sensors can be wildly off. All I can say is my temp sensor seems to be precise, if not accurate.
The...
You're giving me hope. Last night while testing at 1.45V, the chip never exceeded 45C at load (I changed the BIOS to increase the fan speed at 40C). Temperature-wise, I'm really happy with the CPU and stock HSF.
1.5V, here I come.
My testing has been with the mem divider at 200 (Abit is weird, 200 MHZ is 1:2 ratio). During my runs, memory will be half the FSB, and, so far, hasn't been much past 133MHZ, since Sp2004/Prime95 fail pretty quickly above 2400 MHZ at 1.45v. I'm not even entirely sure that 2400 @1.45 is totally...
Thanks. I bought a digital multimeter and checked my 12V rail. It holds steady 12.14V under load at default vcore (1.35 v), all the way up to 2400 MHZ (@vcore 1.45 V where it fluctuates between 12.10-12.11. If I go higher than 2400, Prime fails within a few minutes @2430 MHZ to a few seconds @...
nikolasmor, I forgot to thank you for the Prim95 link earlier.
My MB/PS have a separate 4 pin connector, so 12V should be what I monitor. Is .02 volts a lot of fluctuation or just average?
When booted into the BIOS, the 12V reading shows higher than 12V (I believe it was 12.3V perhaps?)...
That was my thought as well, so I turned it off in the BIOS and set the power settings in XP back to 'Always On'. I just booted the computer and verified that it was off.
It was definitely clockgen in which noticed the clock speed fluctuations.
In speedfan, I noticed that my voltage also...
This one I got from Newegg. I was wondering if maybe it was the motherboard, but other people have had good results with the KN8-SLI. I'm not looking for record-breaking performance (or I would have gotten the DFI), but 'only' 25% wasn't what I expected either.
This chip seems to be stable...
I have had this system about a week now.
KN8-SLI
Opteron 165 (I didn't get the stepping before I popped the heatsink on, so I don't have this info)
2 GB G.skill DDR500 HZ (3-4-4-8 timings)
Geforce 7600GT.
I have let the system run about a week at 'standard' settings, although I did...
