Is there a good resource with the current best practices for choosing raidz vdev sizes with 4k disks or mixed 512/4k? I've read the wiki is out of date and on the forums there's no consistent message.
I'm trying to decide between a 3 and 4 drive pool for my backup server with at least some of...
I'm doing a lowend i3 build for a relative and I'd like to include a small ssd for windows 7 x64 and the most used apps (office and itunes basically) with a seagate 7200.12 for storage. I think this will be a better use of funds rather than going to a core i5--visible speed improvements in day...
Thanks for the suggestions! I decided to go with the 300w seasonic, it seemed like the most reasonable choice from a decent brand.
I just wish some of the 350w 80+gold supplies were available in the us.
I'm working on my zacate based nas and I'm powersupply shopping. Ideally I'd like to find something that's at least 80 plus but my load numbers are really low:
Asrock E350M + 4gb single dimm: 35ish w at load according to Tom's testing
2x segate 7200.12 drives: idle 5w operating 6.7w
1x...
Some updates:
I installed zfsguru to usb and booted from that. With the default tuning the results are almost identical to the first set I posted the averages were +/- 2 MiB/sec
and this is with vfs.zfs.prefetch_disable set to 0 it's almost exactly the same as the live cd results. So I'm...
Sounds good I'll do an install to a usb stick and run the tests again, along with make world and some of the benchmarks from the atom thread with the same specifications. I do want more ram; for some reason this zacate board supports 16gb while the others are only 8 so I don't know if it's a...
Introduction:
A week or so ago I asked for anyone's thoughts on using ZFS with the new and zacate / fusion platform. It looks like I'm the first one to try at least here so as promised here are some impressions and benchmarks. I went with the asrock e350m1 board for two reasons: it was actually...
The a50m southbridge sata is listed as working and supported just by the generic ahci driver under linux. I can't find any recent mentions of it in the kernel mailing list so it looks like it's fully ahci compliant and nothing fancy was needed. Hopefully the bsd and solaris ahci drivers will...
So far all of the zacate boards are using the realtek 8111e. The earlier models in the 8111 series are supported on bsd and solaris; tho I think a 3rd party driver is needed on solaris. Part of this is a learning experiment as this point I can't find reliable data on any of these boards as none...
I decided to dive in and I ordered one yesterday. I ended up going with the asrock board as it's $40 cheaper then the other brands, it supports upto 16 gigs of memory, and it's actually in stock and available. The downsides are only 5 sata ports (4 + esata) but I don't see myself using anymore...
I did a little googling I was thinking of the jmicron 363 chip which used a slightly nonstandard way of implementing ahci (bar5 instead of bar0) it required modification to the ahci driver on linux, solaris and I think freebsd. Something like that isn't a show stopper as it's an easy fix but...
I just remember back when sata were coming on the market some controllers (jmicron specifically) had an issue where they implemented a certain feature differently and drivers had to be customized. I know those details are vague but I'm sure all of this is archived on the mailing lists if anyone...
I've seen several posts talking about how the zacate board are great for a little nas server but I'm wondering has anyone tried one yet? Most of boards seem to be using the realtek 8111 ethernet and that's supported on bsd and solaris. Graphics aren't really an issue but I'm sure vesa...
Oh I understand that; I was just hoping for a little bit better energy savings as oracle has been mentioning that feature in the solaris 11 express docs. I think I may just replace the hardware with something more efficient if it has to run 24/7.
Hi _Gea
I'm on the latest bios, it's actually from 2009 this board has been discontinued. The whole server was assembled from spare parts, tho it looks like I'll have to spend some money if I want it fully functional.
