I've just had an update from the Sony repair centre and they say the DVD Drive, LCD Backlight and Latch need replacing.
I can understand the backlight maybe faulty, but don't understand why the DVD Drive needs replacing, unless it's causing the fault? I'm assuming the latch is the lid...
Should I buy the Advent 7081 laptop?

No light sensor that I'm aware of.
I've looked in the BIOS and couldn't find anything related to change.
Could it be the lid switch and when WinXP loads it thinks the lid is shut and therefore dims the screen?
Anyone know where the lid switch is on the Sony VAIO PCG-K315M? Is it a magnetic reed switch?

1) Yes, on-screen brightness control moves, but does not make any diff to the brightness of the screen.
2) Same for Ac and battery.
3) Will look for gamma program.
4) I've checked the power option settings and even turned power management off.
