I've just had an update from the Sony repair centre and they say the DVD Drive, LCD Backlight and Latch need replacing. I can understand the backlight maybe faulty, but don't understand why the DVD Drive needs replacing, unless it's causing the fault? I'm assuming the latch is the lid...

Should I buy the Advent 7081

Should I buy the Advent 7081 laptop? It's spec isn't anything to shout about, probably why it's quite cheap, but I only need a basic laptop for a single purpose.

Hi, Thanks for the gamma correction program link. I installed it, but changes to each of the settings for brightness, gamma, contrast and level makes very little difference, if any, and behaves similar to the WinXP display properties brightness/gamma settings. The only thing I can think...

I've looked in the BIOS and couldn't find anything related to change. Could it be the lid switch and when WinXP loads it thinks the lid is shut and therefore dims the screen? Anyone know where the lid switch is on the Sony VAIO PCG-K315M? Is it a magnetic reed switch?

Thanks for your advice! 1) Yes, on-screen brightness control moves, but does not make any diff to the brightness of the screen. 2) Same for Ac and battery. 3) Will look for gamma program. 4) I've checked the power option settings and even turned power management off. 5) Oop's...new to...

Hi, I've got a Sony VAIO PCG-K315M laptop. The screen looks ok and normal at the VAIO splash screen and BIOS menu, but goes dim when windows XP loads. Ok with external monitor. Unfortunately, it's now 2 months out of warrenty! I was suspecting the backlight or the Inverter or even a...
