    First SSD... I'm amazed

I think you can draw some parallels between an SSD upgrade to other upgrades, which means it is not for everyone. Take video card for example, for someone who doesn't play any games, putting a high-end, multi-hundred dollar 2GB video card in their machine and they will reply "meh". Put that...

    First SSD... I'm amazed

In 2010/2011 I was on a contract with a number of other developers, almost all were using dell quad core laptops and I was running a slightly dated 2.00 dual core laptop. When I nabbed a 2nd gen Intel x-25m ssd and put it in my laptop, it could outperform all the quad core laptops with 7200rpm...

Samsung 830 Series 64GB for OS drive?

Gotta agree with the 1st reply - if you don't already have the SSDs, I'd buy one. You could probably get away with just a 128GB for both the OS and FSX, but if you can swing it, go 256GB.

Crazy slow speeds on a WD SSD...

I just did a quick ad-hoc test, copied a 16GB virtual disk file from my WD 256GB ssd to the same. I did this twice, leaving the first copy present which reduced my free space on the SSD to less than 30GB. The 2nd copy was quite a bit slower so it does appear that this SSD suffers when it...

Crazy slow speeds on a WD SSD...

I have the 256GB version from the same WD ssd line. I've been fairly happy with it - ran it in my 775 desktop for awhile and it is now in a Toshiba laptop. It benchmarks as good or better as my Intel 320 120GB in most categories. The only performance degradation I've noticed is when it is...

    SSD Health

Don't sweat your SSD health. What you should be sweating is your backup strategy. You have one, right? ;)

    Refurbished Laptops?

I've worked with a number of developers who swear by the refurbs off of the Dell outlet site. If you have the patience to watch that site almost daily until something close to the configuration you want shows up and is the right price, it is a good way to go. My first two laptops were...

    1st SSD...

If you really won't to minize writes to your SSD, just don't turn on your PC. :p Minimizing SSD writes is a good idea, but taking a blanket approach is not. Everyone makes a huge deal about the fact that SSD have a limited number of writes, but how often have we seen someone post "I did it...

[Recommendations] Portable SSD or Flash Drive?

I'd think a 1.8" ssd would be ideal, unfortunately they must all be made of gold as they are all Sata II yet command $2 US per GB. :(

    Got a new SSD, cloning?

No matter how you do it, clean install, clone, or backup/restore, it is wise to verify everything that pertains to using an SSD. Make sure your in AHCI or RAID mode, verify your alignment, and verify auto defrag is off or that the SSD is not on the list of drives to be defragged.

Win7 x64 fail to install on SSD

Don't sweat it - happens to the best of us. I rarely post on any forum as by the time I've verfied my facts the sun has set too many times that it isn't relevant any more!

Win7 x64 fail to install on SSD

A bit longer than a year.... Knew a guy who was an earlier adopter bought a 64GB GSkill SSD in 2008/09. Here's an article for their 256GB released in 01/2009: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/storage/2009/01/20/g-skill-titan-256gb-ssd-review/1

SATA III SSD on SATA II controller

For what its worth, I was running my Samsung 830 on a P5Q Deluxe (sata II of course) as the boot drive for a few months before I built my 3570k machine. Booting seems a second or two faster with the 830 on Sata III vs II. Obviously not a fair comparison as I'm comparing completely different...
