    First SSD... I'm amazed

I think you can draw some parallels between an SSD upgrade to other upgrades, which means it is not for everyone. Take video card for example, for someone who doesn't play any games, putting a high-end, multi-hundred dollar 2GB video card in their machine and they will reply "meh". Put that...

    First SSD... I'm amazed

In 2010/2011 I was on a contract with a number of other developers, almost all were using dell quad core laptops and I was running a slightly dated 2.00 dual core laptop. When I nabbed a 2nd gen Intel x-25m ssd and put it in my laptop, it could outperform all the quad core laptops with 7200rpm...

Samsung 830 Series 64GB for OS drive?

Gotta agree with the 1st reply - if you don't already have the SSDs, I'd buy one. You could probably get away with just a 128GB for both the OS and FSX, but if you can swing it, go 256GB.

Crazy slow speeds on a WD SSD...

I just did a quick ad-hoc test, copied a 16GB virtual disk file from my WD 256GB ssd to the same. I did this twice, leaving the first copy present which reduced my free space on the SSD to less than 30GB. The 2nd copy was quite a bit slower so it does appear that this SSD suffers when it...

Crazy slow speeds on a WD SSD...

I have the 256GB version from the same WD ssd line. I've been fairly happy with it - ran it in my 775 desktop for awhile and it is now in a Toshiba laptop. It benchmarks as good or better as my Intel 320 120GB in most categories. The only performance degradation I've noticed is when it is...

    Refurbished Laptops?

I've worked with a number of developers who swear by the refurbs off of the Dell outlet site. If you have the patience to watch that site almost daily until something close to the configuration you want shows up and is the right price, it is a good way to go. My first two laptops were...

    1st SSD...

If you really won't to minize writes to your SSD, just don't turn on your PC. :p Minimizing SSD writes is a good idea, but taking a blanket approach is not. Everyone makes a huge deal about the fact that SSD have a limited number of writes, but how often have we seen someone post "I did it...

[Recommendations] Portable SSD or Flash Drive?

I'd think a 1.8" ssd would be ideal, unfortunately they must all be made of gold as they are all Sata II yet command $2 US per GB. :(

    Got a new SSD, cloning?

No matter how you do it, clean install, clone, or backup/restore, it is wise to verify everything that pertains to using an SSD. Make sure your in AHCI or RAID mode, verify your alignment, and verify auto defrag is off or that the SSD is not on the list of drives to be defragged.

Win7 x64 fail to install on SSD

Don't sweat it - happens to the best of us. I rarely post on any forum as by the time I've verfied my facts the sun has set too many times that it isn't relevant any more!

Win7 x64 fail to install on SSD

A bit longer than a year.... Knew a guy who was an earlier adopter bought a 64GB GSkill SSD in 2008/09. Here's an article for their 256GB released in 01/2009: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/storage/2009/01/20/g-skill-titan-256gb-ssd-review/1

SATA III SSD on SATA II controller

For what its worth, I was running my Samsung 830 on a P5Q Deluxe (sata II of course) as the boot drive for a few months before I built my 3570k machine. Booting seems a second or two faster with the 830 on Sata III vs II. Obviously not a fair comparison as I'm comparing completely different...

Migrating 500gb hdd to 480gb ssd

Change drive letters. There is a chance Windows will not free up the original drive letter of the 500GB drive, especially if you've ran programs from it since your last boot. I do think when you have switched letters you should power down, disconnect the old 500GB drive, power up and verify...

    Which Ivy Bridge? New build.

I completely agree. I think a C2Q to IB upgrade is worthwile for power users, but not for watching videos, facebook, browsing or using office. I just went from a [email protected] to a [email protected], and there are only two scenarios I can substantially tell the difference. The first is because I have...

Z68 w/SSD caching - need to change out SSD, anybody done this?

ah... I think that comes from many folks not understanding RAID vs. AHCI. They did not have to go into their bios and reset to AHCI - that would accomplish nothing other than making sure Windows doesn't boot anymore. I realize though that many mistake the internet recommendation of "you must...

Any motherboards with Rs-25 Parallel Ports

That is actually a good point, I can't believe I didn't think of that. When I built my wife a SB box last year I went to the trouble to make sure the motherboard had a parallel header but as it turned out, I had to go with a usb converter as the only Win 7 driver that would work with that...

    Partition management on a SSD

SSDs are not fragile. It doesn't matter if every bit has to get moved on the SSD to create your new partition. Its not like you are going to do this every day, and even then I bet it would take a few years to kill it. I do software development on virtual machines daily on a couple of SSDs and...

Z68 w/SSD caching - need to change out SSD, anybody done this?

um... what? Well, which is it, are you in RAID mode or are you in AHCI? There's no reason to be changing your modes to swap out your cache SSD. If you are using Intel caching, you are obviously in RAID mode. You have the steps correct, however I would add some more reboots and...

Intel 520 vs Samsung 830 SSDs

My opinion, you can't go wrong with either, and whichever you get, if it fails, it is just bad luck and won't be because you picked the wrong one. I like the Intel toolkit a bit better than the Samsung Magician software. I prefer the Marvell controller that the Samsung 820 has over the...

Any motherboards with Rs-25 Parallel Ports

What was your first true computer -- Give specs!

Fall 1986 - Epson 8086. Skipped the dual 5.25" floppy drive setup and splurged on a 20MB hard drive running DOS, 3.1 I think. Got a amber monochrome monitor and a 9 pin epson dot matrix printer. Total was around $2k US at the time. Big investment for me as that was almost two months take...

SSD for Steam/game drive, question on partition size

Not exactly correct. True, short stroking an SSD does not improve access times like it does on a mechanical drive, but it will help to maintain its performance over its lifetime and background maintenance can take advantage of that space. Most SSDs benefit from unallocated space. This is...

Migrate HDD partitions to SSD help (either image backup, or clonezilla)

I too have had success using Acronis, I've done HDD to SSD migration four times although I've typically attaced the drive in question to 2nd PC and restored the backup to it, then installed it and booted it up. Once I had to use the Windows install dvd to do a repair on the MBR, but other than...

Need bootable RAID card for SSD (SATAIII)

I just upgraded from a Q9550 on a P5Q Deluxe to my sig (570k on an Asrock pro4-m). best free cloning program for windows 7

I agree. I guess I too am one of those people who gets no joy from installing Windows. But I am one of those people who does not install garbage on my machine that I want cleaned off later - I use VMs for that. For almost four years I ran the same OS installation off my Q9550 system and my...

Read what your ssd update will do! And how easy is data recovery off of a ssd?

I disagree. IMHO, the moral is to back your stuff up. Firmware updates is just one of many things that can go wrong. With how easy and cheap so many backup solutions are these days and how cheap additional storage is, back your stuff up. Windows 7 backup is free. SyncToy is free. Online...

HDD to SSD clone. Must be done and what's best?

I do not buy into the "do a fresh install for an SSD and money will fall from the sky and women will love you" idea. I've done four HDD to SSD migrations and I used a backup-restore method (not a clone) using Acronis 2011 without any issues. Last year a couple of my co-workers did the same...

    MSI Z77A-GD65 & SSD Caching

From a few bits and pieces that I've read, the Intel SSD caching is better described as an odd kind of striping (and not just a simple file cache), hence why the BIOS has to be in RAID mode. File names should have no impact. I'm using the Intel SSD caching on a data drive that I have hosting...

    1st SSD...

My P5Q deluxe has one of the six internal intel sata ports that is meant for hot-swapping (and probably for connecting to an eSata bracket). My guess is that if I connected a boot drive to it that I would get the Windows remove device icon in the notification area (system tray). Maybe that...

ASRock Z77 Extreme4-M Voltage Control Issues

That sure doesn't sound right. I've got its younger brother, the Pro4-M (would have got the Extreme4-M if MC was carrying it when I purchased) and I have it a 42 with Auto voltage, no offset and my voltage readings are ok and so far it is super stable. I finally got a good day to stress it...
