Is it possible to shrink, in-place, ZFS pools?

I have an Intel NUC NUC8i7BEH with a Samsung 970 Pro 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD installed in it. My OS is Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-bit 19.2 . I'm running off of ZFS root with two pools : rpool and bpool, where bpool is everything under "/boot". Just yesterday, while performing an update, the update failed...

32GB Desktop DIMM Listed by Samsung

Thanks for the tip. :) My laptop has a OEM 512GiB NVMe SSD and I've had the paging set to "system managed". Perhaps I should just create a 32GiB static page file on the SSD. jdb2

32GB Desktop DIMM Listed by Samsung

And, yesterday, I proved my point to myself as I had Firefox ( with about 50 tabs open :P ) and PrimoCache running in the background and X-Plane 11 ran out of memory. I really hope Dell will support the new Samsung 32GiB SO-DIMMs as I really need 64GiB of RAM. If I had a huge amount of money to...

32GB Desktop DIMM Listed by Samsung

Well, enabling Windows' built in NTFS compression would of course increase CPU usage, but here, we're talking about latency, and, even with the increased CPU usage, the latency of an access to the compressed RAM disk would still be 1000x smaller ( at least ) than an access to a physical disk...

32GB Desktop DIMM Listed by Samsung

I've been using Romex Software's PrimoCache for years which is a disk cache. Romex Software also makes IMNSHO the best RAM disk for Windows available which can be found here. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't support memory compression, such as WK memory compression in Mac OSX -- you...

32GB Desktop DIMM Listed by Samsung

I have an Alienware 17 R5 with 32GiB of RAM in it. I'd give up all the RGB lighting options just for an extra 32GiB of RAM. 32GiB just can't handle a 16GB PrimoCache disk cache, along with something like Ableton Live, Omnisphere and X-Plane 11 ( especially with all the tons of addons, plugins...

Almost impossible to find USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter

Well, I've looked at USB 3.0 to SATA bridge boards, such as these and have even contemplated using an embedded Linux single board computer running either some type of shell script or custom kernel module to provide SATA host mode to a USB 3.0 slave, but the cheapest board I could find that...

Almost impossible to find USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter

Has anyone here ever heard of or seen a USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter/converter that has a USB 3.0 type A receptacle ( female ) or micro B plug ( male ) on one end and an eSATA ( male ) connector/plug on the other? For the life of me I can't find one and I've been googling for days. It seems everyone...

Can you run an ARECA 1882 RAID card without any cache RAM installed?

I have an ARECA ARC-1882-IX-12 and I've been trying to determine if it's faulty. My RAID array recently failed and during the "Waiting for F/W to become ready" the card timed out at 300 seconds. After disconnecting all the drives it took about 27-30 seconds to boot up. To determine if the RAM...

Shin-etsu x23-7783d vs G751 : Do the application methods differ?

I have two overheating EVGA GTX 580 Superclocked graphics cards : One card gets up to about 99C in OCCT and the other one at least that high or over and when both are in SLI the primary card gets to around 105C. After talking with EVGA tech support they informed me that the probable cause is...

UEFI and ARECA 1882 RAID card installation woes

Don't use the Mac EFI BIOS, it will brick your RAID card. I had to use Areca's DOS BIOS updater utils to un-brick it. Currently I'm running on an ASUS Rampage IV Extreme with a 3970x and an Areca ARC-1882-IX-12 with 4GB of cache and the BBM on Win 7 64-bit with no problems. ( I should mention...

UEFI and ARECA 1882 RAID card installation woes

Tell me about it. Fortunately I'm building an x79 system to replace it. jdb2

UEFI and ARECA 1882 RAID card installation woes

The RAID BIOS no longer shows up on POST and the device is gone. It's ok though, because I un-bricked it. :) I made a Freedos bootable USB key with Syslinux and put the latest firmware and ARECA nflash.exe on the key. Then I booted off the key and re-flashed the BIOS using nflash. jdb2

UEFI and ARECA 1882 RAID card installation woes

On my motherboard ( Crosshair V Formula ) I have to explicitly tell it to use the UEFI BIOS for eg. booting from the DVD drive ; otherwise it will use the legacy BIOS which will not allow Windows to access over 2TB. Can I ask what your hardware setup is? Thanks, jdb2

UEFI and ARECA 1882 RAID card installation woes

Well, now that I did the firmware update, I have a bricked ARECA RAID card. :( Hopefully I can un-brick it somehow. Changing subjects somewhat, I've been thinking of migrating to an x79 based system because all my AMD based systems have been plagued with problems. Seeing that Intel was the...
