Setting power save options individually per drive in Windows?

Do you have other backups? Because this does not seem very robust to Cryptolocker-like situations, or user error.

[project] What would a kicka** home network look like?

ZFS and NFS are entirely unrelated technologies. One is a filesystem (a highly complex one at that), the other is a service allows one to share files over a network. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, Windows only supports NFS on the most expensive Windows versions (Ultimate and such)...

I don't see backup being mentioned (unless you conflate it with storage redundancy? Don't do that :)). Just to be sure, I'd like to note that shared folders are no good at all for backups. It leaves you wide-open for Cryptolocker-like problems and overenthusiastic rm commands on client machines.

Dell XPS 8700 not posting (URGENT)

I can not help you at this point, as I have no idea what is happening here. But as an aside, just to get it to boot, you could try to set the BIOS to ignore the CPU fan, shutdown/disconnect, power the CPU fan some other way (different fan connector or wires into a molex connector), and then...

Dell XPS 8700 not posting (URGENT)

Did you check your motherboard's manual to see what the beeps mean? Did you try to do the boot without connecting any peripherals such as the USB keyboard/mouse?

    An OS for punishment?

Is it possible to randomly do a word-filter thing? So 'assessment' might become 'buttessment', 'long' becomes 'dong' and things like that.

    No video on SuperMicro X7SPA-H-D525

Next time I will certainly get that board instead, but I was on a budget. Aaaaand then I had to order a whole bunch of memory modules to get it running... needless to say I went far over budget. Anyway, the problem was that the memory modules were not being recognized. This is still confusing...

They sent me the same board back, saying it worked fine. I ordered several more modules until I found one that worked (I can look up the type number later). The board functions properly now.

    Turtle Cage w/ rain

Be sure to make it a fanless system... Anyway... I'm looking forward to see how this turns out. Are you sure the flex seal isn't unhealthy for the turtle?

    TrueCrypt no longer supported?

So, should I consider my truecrypted files compromisable? These are made with various older versions.

Looking for advice on improving a very simple but critical backup situation.

Hmm, the only European service I could find that listed the required space asks E175 per month :) Not looking good so far.

Looking for advice on improving a very simple but critical backup situation.

Decisions, decisions... The priority is file restore, not system restore. The only things that would need re-installing are the office suite, PDF writer and AV. I'll try out Crashplan for myself first - a couple years ago I was not impressed, but I have forgotten why. I'll probably present...

Looking for advice on improving a very simple but critical backup situation.

WHS 2011 has nice features and is quite affordable, but from reading I understand that it is difficult to back up more than 2TB of your server's contents. Can anyone with practical experience on that weigh in?

Looking for advice on improving a very simple but critical backup situation.

Yes, you are correct. And that isn't much. But I was looking at the Server Essentials 2012 (E330) because I was under the impression that the extended support status does not include security fixes. Further reading shows that it does so WHS 2011 should be receiving security updates until April...

Looking for advice on improving a very simple but critical backup situation.

It looks good. But I would prefer to have a local backup as well, due to low external connection speed in the area. Very informative post, brings up some good points. This is a quite small operation actually :) As I said in my first post, it is currently just a single PC. I don't see it...
