Hmm... Off the top of my head...
An average Gigabte mATX board
A quad-core Q6600 w/ Zalman 7000Cu (methinks on the fan)
2x2gb, but I have another 2x2gb that I've been meaning to get a REAL mobo that actually has 4 slots
A fanless graphics card
A DVD burner
Couple hard drives
An SSD
Max budget...
First of all.. I want to share some things I've learned...
(1) Surge protectors do not protect your computer and other electronics from power outages. They're only designed for lightning strikes, for the most part.
(2) Surge protectors are not meant to be "daisy chained" to other surge...
Hah... yea, I wish I could've canceled the order.
Oh well, I'll have to RMA it and lose a couple bucks.
I actually ended up buying my buddy a refurbed HP (Athlon X2 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, etc.) for $175 shipped!! And he'll prolly end up getting a 1-yr SquareTrade warranty to make it pretty much...
1. I would imagine it's not set in the bios if the Zotac Forum mods are saying 95w processors aren't a problem.
2. I guess the vga ram sinks are my last resort if it doesn't boot right away.
3. No stock heatsink/fan... hence this thread. But from the sounds of it, the cheapest heatsink...
I'm reading the OCZ forums right now to figure out how I can update my 1.4 Firmware to 1.5.
Basically, from what I understand, you can just burn a LiveCD, like Ubuntu.... and issue these commands in order to do a "sanitary erase", which will wipe all your data and get you back to 100% stock...
I'm trying a 1st gen Phenom 9750 in a Zotac GF8100-C-E mobo for a friend of mine.
I already ordered it, but later found out that the mobo has a 65W max TDP limit, while the Phenom proc is 95W! Some mods at the Zotac forums seem to think this processor and mobo should have no problem as long...
So from what I'm reading, they should be fine, even tho the mobo "recommends" 65W max TDP. Some mods at the Zotac forums say 95W proc will be fine, tho. And quad cores actually do tend to run a bit cooler from my experience.
If I had to focus on ONE fan, tho -- system or cpu -- which would...
Err... I really should've said they meant that a Phenom 1 board makes better sense than a Phenom2, perhaps? Not really important.
Now I'm reading that this board might possibly have a 65W TDP max limit. If that's the case, that would be the only thing stopping it, since the Phenom X4 is 95W...
Crap... should've checked for mobo incompatibilities first!!
I just bought this Phenom X4 9750 and Zotac GF8100-C-E (microATX, AM2+/AM2) mobo for $110 shipped from TigerDirect.... I don't think you can find a better quad core mobo deal, can you?? Or are these not even compatible?!?
Anybody...
I'm about to try this on my "oxidized" Gigabyte motherboard. Does anybody have any tips for me? I'm highly doubting this will work since it's not a solder/joint problem... but ya never know.
I think I might try 420 degrees for 5 min. Let's see how that works...
Cheapest one I see that accepts 8GB of RAM is some open box MSI for $49 + S/H.
But there's a new P5B-VM SE for $60 + S/H. Sooo.. I'll prolly go with that if the wire brush idea doesn't work. Wonder why I didn't see this board when I was looking for it a couple weeks ago.
No chemicals in the air besides the humid air itself.
The thing's been in a case as long as i've had it, with NO water cooler. Mobo was working great until I overclocked it for something like a week and then it just shut down one day, never to start again.
Nothing was ever spilled on it.
OH GAWD...
Gigabyte tells me that a chip on my mobo has been oxidized and it's not covered. OXIDATION?!?!? Almost every metal can oxidize... BUT IN A YEAR AND A HALF? ... on QUALITY components??
Isn't it their responsibility to use metals that won't oxidize? Clearly, the customer...

I really would like to try an Nvidia board, but the "Linux gawds" tell me that Intel is still the way to go, even tho my experience with Linux + Intel graphics isn't the greatest.
BTW, that Gigabyte 9400 board on newegg is cheaper than the P5Q-EM you just suggested. ;)
