• Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.

Shutting down drive in an enclosure, still hear clicking?

Well... depends. If you have Peter Pan on the drive... that ticking and clicking is the crocodile. Eject the drive via your Taskbar and shut it off when Windows has told you that it's safe to disconnect.

Does IDE to SATA converters/adaptors works w/ SATA SSD?

The good old IDE controllers support a maximum of 133 MB/Sec. Even if (!) the adapter should work, your friends wouldn't really benefit from their ssd. Let them go for the Sata Controller, but make sure it's one which is supported by their OS and Mainboard

    10k vs SSD

Not to mention the noise! My Raptor is by far the loudest device inside my Mac Pro... at least until 2009/12/24 ;-)

    WHS or Linux

If your hardware is compatible (check that out at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/os/) OpenSolaris is the way to go! It's not quite point & klick, but there are lots of good howto-Sites around. Some reasons why I wouldn't go with WHS, but Solaris: - ZFS pooled storage design ---...

    new supermicro storage chassis SC847

I'd rather not squeeze 36 drives in a 4U chassis - especially if there are 12 drives to heat up my mb/cpu directly from below, let alone the front drives which give a "warm welcome" to the incoming air.

Multiple drive on single sata port

yes and no. Port multiplicators are not quite cheap, they'll slow your drives down and you have to double-check compatibility. Forget about it when using Solaris or BSD, anyway. Been there, done that - never again. Rather spend that money on a cheap 8-port SATA-Controller in the future.
