Should I worry about Linux running inefficiently on my hardware?

You could alway try Archlinux. It is compile for 686 unlike Debian which has some 386 binaries. You probably won't notice a difference because you are running an i7. If you want to complete optimization then you could use Gentoo.

Got my i7 920 up and running. Wow!

I just got my i7 and I love it. My main machine was an AMD XP 2600+ so it was time for an upgrade. It is so insanely fast. It only cost me $900 not including a case.

Best torrent program to use on linux(ubuntu) **not for illegal use**

rtorrent is good for a server. it is command line so no need for Xorg. An external will work. You just need to make sure you are able to read the format. If it is ntfs then you will need ntfs-3g to be able to write to it.
