Which OS? Windows 7?? Server Platform??

I'm using raidz. Ya I think I confused you because ZFS is indeed software raid. From what I've read it's much more stable than those adaptec software raid cards that are more in my price range. Additionally I've been told and hope to never experience it but ZFS raid rebuilds are much faster...

    ZFS Build Questions

When most people expand their ZFS pool they use something like this because you want AHCI SATA HBA without raid. I believe those raid cards are fine as long as HBA is used instead of raid.

Which OS? Windows 7?? Server Platform??

I was in the same circumstance as OP with multiple computers and a desire to have all my data at a centralized point. From my lurking on these forums, I decided ZFS was best for me and I have been working on learning the command line interface of FreeBSD. However if you don't have the time for...

New file server time... advice much appreciated!

@John Can you clarify why some boards/chipsets require x8 when others are fine with x4? @Steve I just recently had a thread which discussed x8 & x4 ram which may help you. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1546311 Due to cost I went with a i3-530 so I don't have ECC support with my...

New file server time... advice much appreciated!

I'm using the board you mentioned with this ram. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139040 Though it is only a 4GB(2x2GB) kit. It is x8 which you'll need with this board and a xeon.

    Convince me to use ZFS

I used to use Debian many years ago. The busyness of my life made XP convenient and I've forgot most everything Linux. I've been lurking here for a while and have concluded ZFS is the superior option for my home server especially considering cost. There is no OS cost or expensive hardware...

Server build ECC x4 vs x8?

I wish we could give rep on these boards because there were a lot of helpful answers. Ya I tried the calculation and did 128M X 18 chips = 2304 and was instantly confused as I expected it to come out to 2048. Thanks for breaking it down for me as I was confused by the documentation. This...

Seperate HDD for OS & Data ?

With the code WDHD910 that drive is $40 with free shipping until 9/12. Thanks for the suggestion Danny. I was looking for a cheap OS drive to ironically replace a 160GB IDE drive.

Server build ECC x4 vs x8?

well let me clarify my questions. 1. is the x4 or x8 ecc timing requirement determined only by the processor type and not the motherboard 2. in my case where my processor doesnt support ecc does it matter if my ecc is x4 or does my motherboard require x8

Seperate HDD for OS & Data ?

I think it is best to keep the os separate from data, if not separate hard drives definitely separate partitions. I would install all the games to C unless the 1TB drive your considering is 7200RPM. If your having consistent electrical failures I'd consider a battery backup that will...

Testing ZFS RAID-Z performance with 4K sector drives

I'll let you toy with my new build. It's in the mail. Hard drive wise I purchased 3 SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI. Since I don't have many drives you won't be able to test many configurations but atleast it will be at 4k with the 666x3 platters. My plans are for a raid-z1.
