ASUS 7970 DirectCU II available now

Have any of you guys got AMD APP transcoding working on this card? Doesn't matter which driver or software I try, it crashes out with an error on amdocl64.dll. Frustrating as heck!

    8800GTX Newbie - Performance issues?

Thanks for that. I just found the culprit - transparency AA. When I turned on super sampling transparency AA, the frame rate tanks. I guess this is understandable due to the massive amount of transparent textures on-screen (foliage). Turning it off produces high frame rates, even with...

    8800GTX Newbie - Performance issues?

I didn't clean with Driver Cleaner. I'll give that a try now, but somehow I don't think it will make a difference. Thanks.

    8800GTX Newbie - Performance issues?

Hi guys, Just joined the 8800GTX club in MSI flavour. Running an X2 5000+ with it. I loaded up my copy of Far Cry v1.4, and set everything to max. But even with AA only at MS8x (AF at 16x), frame rates can tank to under 20fps when I'm outdoors, especially with dense foliage and when I'm...

Can't decide between the next gen cards? maybe this will help..

I don't know. Knowing me, probably, but I've got more money than sense. :p My point was that some current games (and upcoming games that will come out before the next generation of cards do) can stress any setup to the point of a slide show. So 3D Mark scores count, because they show you a...

Can't decide between the next gen cards? maybe this will help..

And one final point (I'm on a roll - forgive me): I will not give up my 7800GTX SLI setup to buy into ATI until the X1800XT in CrossFire form is widely available and stable. Because no single X1800XT comes close to my setup in raw horsepower, and in my gaming, I never leave redundant power in...

Can't decide between the next gen cards? maybe this will help..

Beep again. If you buy a second card simply to increase your fps from 50 to 80 you are stupid. But folks buy a second card so they can crank up the settings and retain the 50 frame rate, and get enhanced IQ that a single card will never deliver at 50fps.

Can't decide between the next gen cards? maybe this will help..

And you forget one key thing - the X1800XT is not yet available, and when it is, it will cost more. This is NOT a case of ceteris paribus.

Can't decide between the next gen cards? maybe this will help..

You can run any modern game at under 50fps on any card if you try. Having 16x AA, 16x AF and playing exclusively on 1600x1200 resolution may not matter to you, but it matters to many. Case in point: FEAR demo runs at ~5fps on my machine (7800GTX SLI). Horsepower counts. A lot. Sure, you could...

Official word from Zalman regarding VF700 series + 7800GTX

For the record, the Zalman VF700 is not only compatible with the 7800GTX reference design (which basically all current 7800GTX boards are once you remove the heat sink), but you can use two of them in SLI configuration if you do not attached the RAM sinks or the steel retaining plate to the rear...

    Recommendations for X2 AMD cooling.

I throughly recommend the Scythe Ninja cooler with a 120mm fan. It is brilliant. The reason why you don't hear much about it is because very few places actually sell it. But it is by far and away the best cooler I've used (and this includes the XP-120). Reasonably priced too.

    How loud are the 7800's?

Unless your system runs really hot, the chipset fan shouldn't make a racket unless you're putting it under load. It's only when I play a game that it starts whining loudly - otherwise I can't hear it at all.

    How loud are the 7800's?

Depends on just what you classify "noisy" as. To me, if it's anything more than whisper quiet, it's too loud. My GTXs (XFX, full reference design I believe) came with what I would call noisy fans. Not whirlwind, but definitely too much din for my liking. I replaced them both with VF700s...

Any one here use Viper John??

I asked him about whether he has any options for two 7800GTXs on air - nada. There's just no room. If I went water he could still fit the RAM sinks and a couple of waterblocks, but I want to stick with air.

    Pics of X1800XL / X1800XT / TSMC Announcment / ATI AVIVO Preview

Maybe so, but after needing to work with two 7800GTXs, I say give me a shorter card anyday. The shorter the better.
