I've found a place that will sell me a 1Gb 4850 for GBP£67 inc delivery. The cheapest I can find a 5770 is £122. What will the difference in performance be? I currently have a 1280x1024 cheapy 19" monitor, Phenom 2 720BE, windows 7, 4gb RAM, but will probably upgrade the monitor to 1680x1050...
I appreciate all of the above, it just seems to follow for me, if you're using more textures for a scene, your're going to need the bandwidth to process them. 128bit memory might make sense for 512Mb VRAM, with 1024 it doesn't. With 1024 Mb RAM you're allowing for more textures, with 128bit...
I realise this, but the two are related if not the same thing. More RAM = more or bigger textures, = more bandwidth is handy... bandwidth also needed for good AA and filtering performance.
Like many directx 10 games, Far Cry 2 microstutters with everything unless you vsync or frame limit to a frame rate less than the minimum your card can manage. Doesn't seem to have a problem in dx 9 mode.
The 4850 does have minutely less bandwidth, but even in the UK I can buy one for £68, 1Gb XFX version. The 5770 is about the same price as a 4870/90, depending where you shop, both with double the bandwidth of the 5770. If ATI's only argument for the narrower bus on the 5770 is that it's not...
If, as ATI say, the 5770 only needs 128 bit memory, since game developers won't be using so many textures and will use superdooper directx 11 shader programmes instead ... why does it need 1Gb video ram? Surely fewer textures = less memory?
Might be, switching vsync on and off doesn't seem to change anything, though, if anything, the problem isn't as bad with vsync off. It does seem to respond to being switched to windowed mode then back to full screen (sometimes).
The problem is not vsync, or FPS, the problem is that the game seems to speed up and slow down rhythmically about once per second. Even if FPS varied, time within the game should pass at a constant rate, which it is not. This is the problem and happens whether vsync is on or off.
