Yea now is not a good time to pick things up. I had a few opportunities to get x299 but just as X79 vs X58, it wasn't a big enough upgrade to X99, any decent chip, 10900X+ was crazy expensive.
Ended up working on an AM4 + 5950x for my current upgrade now
Agreed about 1366 CPU prices but peeved how much boards are still going for.
I've never had X79 but desired it for a while. Then X99 came along and I just felt X79 wasn't a far enough change over X58 to warrant the upgrade.
When I finally left X58 in late 2020, it was to X99 which I'm currently...
I'm still trying to put a X58 system back together, the Asus p6x58-e is a rescue (one of the chokes was shorted out, I replaced but it shuts off on any sort of load)
X58 still one of the greatest platforms from Intel
Heads up - this doesn't actually "convert" the audio processing of sound card (motherboard or standalone) to Toslink, it's basically a standalone USB sound card with TosLink output so the sound maybe very different than your current source out from the computer.
One solution I've used to get TOSlink before is to get an HDMI->TOSLink breakout box, it takes HDMI in and passes through the video/audio to HDMI out while also piping audio out to a TOSLink port. I've also used TVs as the convertor when I had an amp that didn't have HDMI in, only TOSLink
I agree with you on this, coming from overclocking since the P2 days it was definitely fun to get 50% or even a 100% OC on some of the really friendly generations (Celeron A, Durone etc). Modern stuff seems much more complicated (even X99 gen took a bit getting used to), the various voltages...
I think it was serviceable up to 2020ish and Windows 10, nowadays even my X99 with 8 core 5960X is feeling slow.
I still have a X5670, just need a board
Yup, I actually have 2 adapters, USB to older 7.4mm barrel and then a 7.4mm barrel to blue tip 4.5mm barrel. This way I can do all my bench testing with just 100W USB C brick
