Noob with networking - Fios switch question

    1) Yes 2) A straight through network cable will suffice 3) CAT5e supports gigabit speeds, so it you already have Cat5e cables, you can use them. If you are purchasing new cables anyway, just purchase CAT6. The cost difference is minimal.

    starting with a Cisco 3640

As someone mentioned, the 2500 or 2600 series routers will do just as well. They also tend to be a bit cheaper on ebay as well. The newer wireless routers (800 series) are probably a more expensive starting off point. They would probably be a better choice as your knowledge of configuring...

Device to send SNMP traps based on electrical signals?

APC EMUs (Environmental Monitoring Units) will do that. They are expensive when new, but you might be able to find a used one.

    what's the difference?

IIRC some of those 108Mb routers just run to seperate 54Mb networks and combine them for a theoretical 108Mb maximum. True speed will be dependent on many factors including your distance from the router and any obstructions (walls, etc) that may be in the way.

    Linksys dropping peripheral comps

How long have you had the router and how long has it been doing this? I have found several wireless routers and access points that do this. I have always chalked it up to crappy hardware.

    bad admin...nay "badmin"

During a network upgrade I unplugged the WAN feed going into one of our core switches. It wasn't too bad since there was only one other IT guy that was RDPed into a server to shut it down, but the network guys looked at me like I was an idiot! In my defense the WAN feed was the same color cable...

Rainbow Six Vegas W/ Xbox 360 Controller

You are using the Xbox 360 wired controller? That works fine, but other controllers that look excatly like the 360 controller (Like the Logitech Chillstream) do not work in some games even though they are detected as the same controller.

Rainbow Six Vegas W/ Xbox 360 Controller

I usually use the KB & Mouse as well. I use the controller for racing games as well as when I want to sit in bed and play a game. It's not really a matter of accuracy (I stink either way :)), it's just being about to move away from my desk.

    Dell shipping problems?

My GF ordered a laptop from them on Thanksgiving. I think she had it a few weeks later. They may have been inundated with orders for the holiday season.

Help me with some mysterious BSODs

Do you have it setup to dump when it crashes? If so, use the XP support tools to read the mini dump files. Sometimes that will point to another driver that is causing problems.

    Getting out of Sprint contract?

Cell phone service? Sprint has an early termination fee. Sometimes they will waive it if you have had the service for less then a certain amount of time (only some providers will give you this trial period). If you are unhappy and willing to pay the termination fee, then just pay it and move...

Rainbow Six Vegas W/ Xbox 360 Controller

The Xbox 360 wired controller works. I'm not sure what the difference is, since Windows detects the Chillstream as an Xbox 360 Controller as well.

Rainbow Six Vegas W/ Xbox 360 Controller

No dice. The more I read the more I was pushed towards the conclusion that only the Xbox 360 wired controller will work in certain games. Logitech conformed to some universal button mapping when they created the chillstream (which looks exactly like the Xbox 360 controller). The problem is, not...

Buy RAID Card or Build New Server

Are you open to other operating systems? I just upgraded my file server using 5 X 500GB drives in a hot swap enclosure. It uses openSUSE with a PCI 1x SATA II controller (SIL 3132 Based) and a single 1-in 5-out SIL 3132 based port multiplier. All of this runs on an Athlon 300+ with openSUSE...
