Yeh i had a problem like that with my new DVD burner i tried everything downloading the ASPI drivers, downloading the latest firmware, check cabling everytihng, and yes checked the master or slave. It was detected in bios and device manager but just didn't work. I'm going to return it tomorrow...
I use to have a PII 333mhz which i had for like 7 or 8 yrs can't remember, still works fine but hten i upgraded it to an AMD 800Mhz like last year and then to a 1.5ghz P4 this year all old parts from friends. I also got a P4 2.53ghz which i got like 2 or 3 yrs ago too nothing wrong with it.
Steppings are like different revisions of a processor, the processors usually get revised because they have some fault in them, like the problem with the AMD64 mem controller which was fixed or so i think with the Venice and San Diego cores. If the processor changes entirely like a new...
Yeh, its nothing special to run at 1024 x 768 my single 7800 can do that. Its great your happy and all but seriously if you do up the reso it does look much better, but hten thats up to you ;) .
Doesn't really matter if it can handle it, no artifacts (you'll know what it is when you see it) and the cpu recover doesn't bring it back to stock speeds, it can probably handle it. If you're not already using it, download ATI tool.
Try changing the ram timings from 1T to 2T since you're are using 2GB, if you're using a 3500+ of an older core not the Venice then it most probably could be the ram, thats if you're using 4 mem sticks, because the mem controller in the older cores have problem with reading 4 mem banks full.
