i've enjoyed both osx and windows. this last time around, i was planning on buying a mac pro (have been very happy with my macbook pro), but due to some software i must use (professionally) windows was still going to be in the mix. i realized i could probably do better hardware for less...

there's probably no such thing as a good computer brand for those who are willing to build their own--choices would almost certainly be limited, prices would be higher, etc. etc. you'd have to offer exotic or other wise unavailable parts (custom maybe), know your shit, and still be somehow...

the color isn't so very different, it looks like a gamma issue to me. have you disabled adobe gamma? although i'm not sure if that explains the similarity between the windows viewer and ps...worth a try.

Defense mentioned two of the more popular low cost options (also the HP LP2475w)...but you haven't mentioned your budget. Eizo, NEC, and LaCie, also offer a range very very good photography appropriate monitors for considerably more dough.

madFive again with some good advice. one issue with ISO is that in the dogged avoidance of noise many people opt to underexpose at say 1600 when a properly exposed image at 3200 might have added no additional noise--and given an image of better overall quality. obviously this is a case by case...

i have to say i'm interested in how (or rather where) CAF didn't do such a good job on those images...in the demo (and in other cs5 demo videos) it looked unreal. still, pretty amazing time-cost/benefits.
