    Well, I hate to say it but... I give up. The error occurs all the time. When I try and run a test, it will sometimes pass and sometimes fail - the error doesn't occur under the same conditions each time, which makes it near impossible to replicate, let alone diagnose. Sometimes the error occurs...

    Thanks so much for the input! Those are some great ideas, and I will spend this evening doing exactly as you suggest. I will post back here later after I finish, or hopefully, after I find the problem! I actually have not installed any codec packs, as VLC can handle the .mkv container natively...

    I reset the CMOS 3 separate times between installs of Windows just to be safe. The option to disable the onboard video isn't an option; instead you select which video device is initialized... same result I am sure, but yes I switched the BIOS settings between the onboard and add-in card...
