Which D5 pump is the highest quality, and where are you guys buying it from?

I always wanted an Iwaki but quickly realized I could never come close to using anything close to it's powah. And then there was the small issue of... they were waaay too expensive back then.
They can be undervolted and dialed in to the desired flow. The pitch and SPL changes as well. Best driven with a dedicated switching power supply (eg. Meanwell) that can output 5-30VDC at 5A for example.

The alphacool apex vpp runs at a lower rpm than the standard D5. The Alphacool version has plastic guts, the standard has metal guts. I have read that the alphacool has a higher lph than the standard version at 100%. I cannot speak to this as I have never ran either at 100% full time. I have run both and never had one fail. If I had to buy a new pump today, I would likely get the Apex because it is a cooler gray color with black sleeving and does not need to be hidden by a pump cover.

i'm still running an old swiftech pump by the same design....well over 20 years old, it just won't die. might outlive us all.
The truth is, if you have ever opened up a standard D5(I have) to clean it, you will see that it has minimal moving parts and should last for decades as long as you do not run it dry.

Yep. Running dry or even cavitating for a bit will absolutely send it to the scrap heap in the sky! ;-)

I've flirted with the idea of running a fixed pump speed because the thought of cavitating has crossed my mind with pwm fluctuations. Although to be fair my pwm increments are maybe 10 to 15 percent from the lowest point so I don't think it's worrisome. I believe I top out at no more than 30% at my highest point max setting. Removing all my 90s I feel like I have easier flow with less restrictions allowing lower pump speed.

yes, i have cleaned mine several times. it started making a ticking noise one day, cleaning it solved that. these things are a genius design in their simplicity.

I was going to create my own thread but the new post creation basically pointed me here. Long story short, my wife added a ThermalTake water cooling system that she then gifted to me (not an AIO). The DDC pump died so we grabbed one of the EK pumps (in sig) out of the retired computer and placed it in this computer. Turns out that this pump leaks very slowly so we have to fill the reservoir every week or two. The old pump and its replacement are sitting above a 120 mm fan so I think it's getting plenty of cooling.

Is there a good relatively cheap pump that anyone would recommend? I don't think it matters if it's D5 or DDC at this point but it's looking like we'll be purchasing a pump and separate reservoir as the graphics card prevents most combo units (whole package has to be less than 6".

https://www.amazon.com/CiCiglow-Computer-Dissipation-Cooling-black-12m/dp/B08DFYF6L6 its ~5".
mine ran for almost 5 years before my cpu block leaked and i switched to an aio.
