Limits on the amount of VRAM on Nvidia's consumer GPUs have forced the modding community to take matters into their own hands. Time and again we've seen various DIY memory upgrades being performed, and it's even offered as a proper repair service in underground markets, but rarely is it done openly. As such, we've just spotted a vendor that will upgrade the 11GB of VRAM on an RTX 2080 Ti to 22GB and provide the BIOS for it upfront — no shady back-alley deals required.

48 gig? Does that much make a difference on a 4090?
Not for gaming, but on LLM training or inference it is a huge difference. 48gb turns a 4090 into a (slightly) cheaper RTX A6000 Ada. The big Ada chips (4090) still compare well against most of the high end Blackwell workstation and server parts.

But you'll still have a 2080ti?
Pretty much. No faster than before, but you get more VRAM. You can buy 22gb 2080ti's on ebay for around $400(+)... so it does represent the cheapest option for a usable 20gb+ VRAM setup (for LLMs).

That being said, I'd avoid if you care at all for reliability, these memory swapped cards seem prone to dying quickly.
 
Seems pointless even for AI. I would think a 2080ti would be to slow and missing features that enhance AI performance.

You're right it's missing other features for AI use if you wanted bleeding edge performance, but that doesn't mean it's not good/serviceable. I think people get too attached to benchmarks when just meeting expectations is far lower AND cheaper. If you wanted to game and have AI workloads I could totally see this setup with a modified 2080Ti working perfectly fine as 16GB (which is where new cards are) is gonna be tight for 2K gaming + AI.

I think people get too attached to benchmarks when just meeting expectations is far lower AND cheaper. If you wanted to game and have AI workloads I could totally see this setup with a modified 2080Ti working perfectly fine as 16GB (which is where new cards are) is gonna be tight for 2K gaming + AI.
This, the speed of VRAM vs running a model that has to, if supported, out to system ram is still better.

There are entire subreddits dedicated to squeezing as much AI performance from shit as possible for as little as possible. It's become almost an irrational obsession to some.

EDIT - I agree with you. And I find this annoying too. Because it'll just drive the prices up even more now that this is a thing. Because as pendragon1 said "muh AI".

Like the days of overclocking, when you could actually get considerable performance with overclocking, but then over the years or decades, the gains were just less and less and less and required so much more testing and trial and error.

Except I don't recall Q6600's being way more expensive than they ought to have been years after their release. This seems a bit different.

True, most CPU's of decades past got cheaper with age, but there was also no big technology that came out that required mass consumption of existing resources, like AI has done to GPUs and Memory, which impacts everything that uses memory in any form.
 
Would be interesting to see if they can upgrade my MSI RTX 5070 to 24GB and what the cost would be. 12GB is fine but with me modding games the VRAM limit is quickly reached.
