Gears of War Reloaded

I take it this is a recomp project?
No.
xHeliosx used a leaked 2008 dev/windows build.
Content and assets from the 360 version were transferred and adapted directly into a 2 week old PC build from what I've read.

Ah, that explains why it's a little on the down low.

I'll have to snag this before it gets taken down. Gears 2 is my favorite game in the series.

Got confused for a min, I see we’re talking about of port of 2 now, checking it out as we speak. Not sure I’m willing to shell out the dough for Reloaded.

I made it through chapter 1 last night. So far, so good. Performance is super high for the most part. 4K/120. There are occasional hitches, but they're rare. My system is dead quiet most of the time, so it isn't pushing anything very hard. The game looks like a hybrid of an old game and a new one, which is admirable for a free passion project. The UI is super tiny at 4K with no way to increase the size, so hopefully you don't need subtitles and you can see the weapon icons well enough. At this point I can mostly quick reload off an internal clock.

Of there's something about the game running at super high FPS that makes me feel uneasy. I really don't get motion sickness, but I think the normal bobbing around gets amplified with more FPS? I can't really visually tell you what it is, but something makes my stomach feel "off." Tonight I'm going to try it with the camera shake disabled and see if that's the culprit. I feel like the camera effects are a Gears hallmark, but something isn't quite right here. Still, this whole package is impressive. It feels like a real game for the most part. It even has Steam integration.

Probably the motion blur. It always had obnoxious full screen blur since the original 360 release.

Turning camera shake off seemed to smooth things out except for when running, which is still nauseating to the point that I rarely do it.

Also I’m convinced I never even played 2. Enjoying it so far, though my aim is trash using a pad.

Edit: Confirmed. Pretty sure I’d remember shooting a literal butthole to make it open up and let me through.

Camera shake seems to be the culprit for me, too. I think something about that + higher FPS = mild motion sickness.
I have definitely played through Gears 2 more than once, but it's been so long it feels like a new game. Some missions are familiar, while others I don't really remember it all.
I'd say the game has higher highs than #1 (which I've probably played through 10 times at this point), but some of the underground sections feel phoned in.

Camera shake doesn't seem to bother me one bit.
What does bother me is the AI pathing.

I'm either running too far ahead of my team, then they just get stuck on terrain or they refuse to move anymore, which means I can't advance.
Or I'm too far ahead when POI's come up and I can't hear the convo's anymore and I can't advance.

Reloading a checkpoint and staying close to the team always seems to work.
Guess I'm not much of a team player. 🤷‍♂️

No, it's dumb. They slow it down like that on purpose to try and get you to look around at the pretty graphics in a world that is blocked off by rails, invisible or otherwise.

Also to give time for new areas to stream in since it was originally made for Xbox 360. I don't think people who had one can recall just how bad the loading times were on it before HDD installation became an option.

I made it through the whole thing without any real technical problems. Pretty amazing that this was just some dude's labour of love project. About the only issue I encountered was that I found myself getting hung up on the environment pretty regularly. I'm not sure if that's this port or if it was in the original game, though. I hadn't played the original in 15+ years, so that might've been an issue all along. Any time the ground has something slightly raised, I found myself wasting too much time trying to get around it. Ditto with the audio. The actual game is only in stereo, but the UI and menus are oddly in proper surround sound.

After playing through the original one so many times via remasters and remakes, it felt good to go back to this one. It's the combat-heavy workhorse of the series. I didn't mess around with MP, but I remember this being the one with the best co-op of the original games. This port seems to support it via Steam, though.

I hope the keepers of the keys for Gears 2, 3, and Judgement see this and get inspired to finally give us real ports of those titles. Frankly, if they only make it as good as what this dude did that would be fine.

I too finished the game and would get stuck on every little pebble and stair step.
I just forward rolled out of it every time.

The game would crash for me when trying to load a checkpoint after dying about 5 times, making me lose my progress and having to start the chapter over.
Also during the "Kill the Brumak pilot" sequence, I would kill him and then the Brumak would stop making noise, turn black and than disappear making me have to reload the check point about 8 times.
So I let Dom lead the way out of the elevator and let him take out the pilot which worked for some reason smh.

Other than that, I had a great time and would recommend.

Weird side note, this inspired me to replay Gears 4 and 5. I still can't get over the audio quality in Gears 4. It might be the best I can recall for a video game. Especially the positional stuff. The planes flying overhead dropping those explosive bots and even just where dialogue and gunfire seem to be coming from = so top notch. I can close my eyes and know where things are taking place. The planes flying over sound like they're buzzing my house.

I have always thought the gun sounds in every Gears game sucks. No matter what audio setup the guns always sound way too weak and low compared to other sounds in the game. I have tried everything over the years so don't tell me its my setup as I have had multiple setups during that time such as soundbars on the TVs and numerous headphones and 2.1 setups using various sound cards in the pc.

I don't think that's just you, I agree with that. The guns are muted compared to the other sounds and nothing really sounds like it has any level of impact. In any of them. You're shooting a ton, so I can imagine if they tuned it higher things would get annoying, but the lack of "oomph" to anything still looms large. The guns feel weak, and the sponginess of the enemies compounds that. Been like that since the first one.

Beta is going on I started talking to this new kid in ogp real hard job about Gears he has a GOW sweatshirt said he played it last night. I showed him a picture of Cliffy B on my phone. He didnt even know who he was.
