Gears of War Reloaded

I preordered and played it the day it launched on Xbox 360 in 2. Absolutely loved the campaign. The types of set pieces used throughout blew me away at the time. It felt like the first truly gen 7 game. CliffyB needs to get back to making those kinds of games again instead of constantly trying and failing with the gimmicky multiplayer bullshit.

Not seeing any kind of clue that it's using Dolby Vision. It's one of those games where you have to toggle HDR on within Windows to enable it in-game. It just calls it "HDR" so I dunno if it's operating within some kind of wrapper or what. Kind of like MPC-HC supports videos with DV, but it just pops the normal HDR banner up on the TV itself.

I'll have to put some real time into it later. I just DL'd and fired it up on my lunch break. From memory, the campaign isn't that long so I can probably blow through it in a few days.

Didn't he vow to never make games ever again? :D

He vowed that in 2012 after leaving Epic, but came back 3 years later with Boss Key Productions and LawBreakers. I heard he was interested in bringing Jazz Jackrabbit back.

Gears of War Reloaded- DF Review- PS5/PS5 Pro/Xbox Series X|S/PC- The New Ultimate Edition?

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8jBoIvToZY

I spaced that this was the first time this game was ported to the PS platform. That's a pretty big deal in itself. As a PC gamer, it seems better, but in ways I might not notice without seeing old footage. Kind of interesting how much darker and scarier the game looked originally. Some for technical reasons, some for atmospheric ones. That's my memory of it, too. It made some of those areas feel more grim. The continued with the second game, but not so much with the 3rd. Related, I'm hoping those still see the light of day at some point. Hopefully before they release a 4th version of this game in 10 years.

An interesting comparison video of all three versions:

It seems the most obvious improvement is in the lighting. The Ultimate Edition seems to have some have some image instability issues as well as looking a little blurry in general. The Reloaded version seems to fix that and improve a few other things such as shadows and better AA, and overall looks to be cleaned up a bit. Both the re-release versions seem to drastically alter the visual here and there from the original.

I played through most of the first chapter last night. It is what it is. There were some occasional quirks with panning around when you enter a new area (the screen kinda wigs out) but it's otherwise Gears looking better and running at high FPS.
It might not be what they're intending, but I turned the contrast down in the HDR settings to give things a darker look like the original game. If things look too bright and sunny for you, give that a shot.

release Gears 2 and 3 on PC and I'll consider buying this...I played Gears 1 the first time it was released on PC...really fun game...repetitive but fun

$40 for this is just a whole lot. $30 is really the most anyone should be asking for such an old remaster. $20-25 is more reasonable.

Yeah, I am not a fan of the brighter, cleaner image. I do like the seamless transitions from cutscene to gameplay, though. Otherwise it's pretty much the same game.

I tried the game because i got it for free, game runs fine but after a half hour or so the game starts microstuttering and the only solution is to reboot PC...uninstalled.

I'd tend to agree. It definitely seems way to bright in a lot of areas and you lose that dark and moody atmosphere the original had. Love it or hate it you could say, the monochrome visuals are what gave the game its identity at the time and made it seem unique.

Are we ever getting 2 & 3 on PC? This is cool but I really want the rest of the games.

I played for 1.5 hours straight and didn't have an issue.

"I should note that Gears of War: Reloaded currently suffers from major issues on the RTX-50 series GPUs. As you can see, our minimum framerate is really low on both the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090. Right now, the game suffers from major texture streaming issues on the RTX-50 series GPUs. Due to these streaming issues, the game also suffers from some stuttering issues. These issues are exclusive to the RTX-50 series, and NVIDIA is fully aware of them. Sadly, we don’t have an ETA on when they will fix them.

What I find hilarious is that these texture streaming issues have been present since its beta phase. At the end of the article, you can find a video from the beta that highlights them. So, I don’t know why NVIDIA hasn’t addressed them. They were aware of them for over two months.

Due to these streaming issues, I don’t recommend getting GoW: Reloaded if you own an RTX-50 series GPU. You should wait until NVIDIA fixes these issues. If, on the other hand, you own an AMD GPU or another NVIDIA GPU, you will be able to enjoy the game the way it was meant to be."

I blew through it over the weekend. No stuttering or issues here. It's Gears 1 in its ultimate form...until they decide to remaster it again. That said, after playing through 4 versions of this game across 3 different generations I uninstalled it immediately after killing Raam. I was only missing 2 COG tags and I didn't care enough to go back and get them. Like seemingly every time I play through Gears 1 I also keep looking forward to parts that aren't actually in this one. Pretty sure all of my fondest old school Gears memories are in the 2nd game.

How long did it take you?
Somewhere around 7-8 hours. That's on normal difficulty and grabbing all of the obvious COG tags. That was 31/33 in my case, but it was also my 6th or 7th time playing through the game. I died a couple times, but I don't think any of those set me back more than 4-5 minutes. I didn't touch MP. I didn't like it then, so I know I won't like it now. I was all about Horde mode in Gears 3, though.

I would have sworn the original was longer than that but I only played it on the 360 so it's been maaany years. And yeah I also have no interest in Gears MP.

If you're anything like me, your memories of the 3 Gears games bleed together. I just checked the Xbox app and it's saying 7-8 hours for most use cases and 10 hours for "competionist." It's a pretty straightforward game without a lot of exploration and minimal penalties for dying. My deaths almost all involved accidentally nuking myself with grenades, although there are some areas where kryll will kill you even though they look super bright in this version.

I think the worst part of gears was the dude who you can’t kill without hammer of dawn. I always die on that part of the game.

strange that only Gears 5 (and soon Gears 1 along with the upcoming E-Day) are on Steam...Gears 2 and 3 aren't even available on PC anywhere...why such a weird release?...why not release all 5 games in a collection?

so Gears 1 will be on Steam...Gears 2 and 3 are not on PC...Gears 4 is on PC Game Pass and Gears 5 is on Steam...I liked the first Gears a lot but won't support this until all 5 games are released on PC/Steam...you won't understand the full story by not playing Gears 2 or 3

Gears of War 2 is Finally on PC (No Emulator Required!)

I take it this is a recomp project?
From the YouTube video description:

After 18 years, Gears of War 2 is finally playable natively on PC-no emulator required! In this setup guide, I walk you through the newly released "Hollow" PC port, which was created using a previously leaked developer build.

Crazy 2 & 3 were never ported. I always assumed they were on PC along with 360 back in the day.

They were released back when Swiney and CliffyB called PC gamers a bunch of pirates, and said consoles were the future, which was reflected in the nightmare that was Unreal Engine 3. That changed rather quickly after Swiney decided to self-publish Fortnite
