Controllers?

The 8bitdo controllers are quality but I find that the ergonomics force my elbows/forearms much more inward than the standard Xbox controller ergos; which isn't all that comfortable.

I've yet to have an Xbox 360/Series X controller die on me and I have 4 of them. I did have one of the bumpers break after a couple of years on my COVID-era 'Xbox Labs custom' controller but I was able to get the part and easily fix it. Also have a PS5 controller but don't use it very much as it's not quite as comfortable to me as the Xbox style. I'd love to try one of those Gamesir G7 Pros or a Flydigi Vader but it seems wasteful to spend $70+ while my current controllers are good.

As dumb/obvious as it sounds, I like that the Linus video shows someone holding it and showing how the layout works in someone's hands. They also get into the physical ergonomics of the layout, thumb placement, smaller hands/thumbs, etc. GN's video was more about specs even though controller preference often comes down to simply how something feels in your hands.

Agreed, I really liked Linus' video over this. Went over most of the things I was concerned/curious about. Really not a fan of how it looks like it will feel or the triggers. Hoping I get a chance to hold one in person, otherwise I'm not buying

Controller body looks rough, triggers look rough, and the thumbstick placement seems a bit awkard/out of reach

That did a good job reviewing the ergonomics on their other channel too.

I have the new steam controller. It works well for me for couch computing. But I also liked the old one as well minus the really poor ergonomics.

I have been using various Xbox controllers and a ps5 controller on and off.

I particularly like the pads as mouse inputs. The pads have odd deadzones that cannot be adjusted/turned off (yet) but they can easily be ignored with the very well implemented gyro controls for fine input.

Biggest issue is the price. It is a good controller, but is it worth 100 bucks? Debatable.

Might be if it lasts 20 years and is repairable.

But you just described my Xbox 360 controllers I still use, modded/repaired over the years when wanted/needed, and got for less than $100

The Xbox 360 controllers are fucking tanks. They're heavy as hell, but they can withstand a nuclear blast. Last month I fired up 2 of them I got in 2005 and they still work fine with no stick drift or button issues at all. The analogs aren't my favorite, but they do still work. You do need that proprietary dongle for them to work on the PC, though.

Yeah I have the PC wireless dongles as well (I only have 1 wired 360 controller from 2006/2007 I bought, the rest are wireless ones from 360 consoles I used as Windows Media Center extenders)

They have bootleg wireless PC dongles you can still pick up too - they even work with the official driver/PnP auto install - the trick/key versus official ones though is you just have to specify device type in device manager, then it works fine (otherwise will just show as unknown device)

The Micro USB port went bad on my Xbox Elites one time USB C is better. I had to toss them due to disconnects.

The 8bigdo utlimate 2 is nice imo... I tried a gamesir and it was too small...

My biddy is trying to get me to get a dual sense for the subtle/advanced haptics... he says they're a real nice feature. Needs to be plugged in for those though.

Yeah, love the comfort of the Dual Sense, but the wired requirement (and slow bluetooth on my desktop) really dampers the experience. I was hoping the 'Playstation Games on PC' initiative would've taken off and we would've seen a officially licensed 2.4 ghz adapter released for the Dual Sense - but guess that will be a pipedream for now (unless Valve or the community cooks up something).

Unfortunately, there are so few games (only PS4/5 ports really support it) that support the Dual Sense haptics/touchpad/speaker that the features are basically worthless. Even among the games that support the features the implementation isn't usually that great. e.g. It's pretty neat in the Spiderman games but almost unnoticeable in God of War/Ghost of Tsushima; I ended up using the Xbox controller in those. I'm currently using the Dual Sense while my Xbox controller is awaiting new TMR sticks to be installed. It's fine but since the features never get used and the symmetrical stick layout is a little less comfortable than the asymmetrical sticks of Xbox style gamepads I'm looking forward to moving away from it.

Something else to consider in regards to the PS5 DualShock controller. With Sony pulling out of releasing single-player games on the PC it's features will cease being used at all. If you like the shape then by all means pick one up; but don't expect for the features that differentiate it from other controllers to be of any use whatsoever.

Yeah.... this is my fear... I've seen in other threads and sites people tell me it is unwarranted as there are third party games that use the features and it is 0 cost for them to simply enable it on PC if the game releases on PS5 anyway but I don't buy it. I think we will see less support. Bummer. Our only hope is for the new Xbox to actually implement some new features in their controller for parity
