New OLED Nintendo Switch dropping October 8th

Hopefully the rumored DLSS-equipped Switch is still in the works.
All the rumors of this upcoming Switch model were so far off that I don't trust at all that there is a more powerful Switch being made. Whenever the Switch 2 drops then we'll see a more powerful console. If anything the Switch 2 is in planning phases now with nothing concrete laid out yet about it. Seriously... nobody saw this OLED version coming... it doesn't even make sense honestly unless it replaces the existing Switch slowly over the coming months. The new OLED switch is only good news to people who haven't gotten a Switch yet or even if they were on the fence about it.

I think the chip shortage got em. Look for an OLED switch with faster guts to come out with BOTW2 releases, late 22 or 23.

So like the same demographic they always been targeting? Nintendo is not suppose to grow with you.

Yeah, it amazes me that people like him still haven't figured this out.

After finding that there are only three first-party Gamecube games that I n actually stomach replayiing twenty years later, they left me behind a long time ago.

Unfortunately, with the underpowered consoles they normally ship, most of the third-party game are shovelware; the Switch was powerful enough to handle 360-era open-world ports, but unless you don't already have a PC with a Steam library, the wall of third-party ports hit a performance wall this last year (and if you do, every indie title will end-up on pc)

There will never be a port of anything truly challenging , as it's too underpowered to play modern open-world games like Fallout 4, GTA5, or HZD! If idiots looking for their Animal Crossing fix is all the people sustaining Nintendo, then they obviously don't care about these problems!

Also, unlike the original open Swirtch, you can expect years of locked-down gameplay.

I play more games on Switch than I do on PC at the moment.

Of course, I also had a Pokemon themed wedding, zelda and mario tattoos, hundred+ dollar metroid and zelda statues, etc.

Anyone decrying games as "kiddy" though needs to grow the fuck up. Trying too hard to say other things are kiddy is the truly immature statement.

I just want my Nintendo games at a more consistent framerate, but if I can't get that - no problem, I'll play them as they are.

As soon as we saw BOTW 2 was running on OG hardware with no improvement we should have known what to expect.

It really is a shame. Mobile graphics have come lightyears since Tegra/Maxell-based archetecture in Switch was introduced 5 years ago.

For that matter, can we also have a moratorium on declaring that people aren't "real gamers" because they don't play certain kinds of games or use certain platforms?

Anyone who takes their gameplay even somewhat seriously is a real gamer. Mobile gamers are real gamers. Someone who's a hardcore Candy Crush fan is a real gamer. And of course, someone who loves playing Animal Crossing or Pokémon is a real gamer.

Gatekeeping is part of why gaming is sometimes toxic; it's an attempt to treat gaming as an exclusive club that kicks out certain demographics. Screw that. Let as many people in as possible.

My biggest issue is with people who consider themselves "PC Master Race" and think that consoles are, by default, bad. However, Ninendo Switch is the exception to the rule as Nintendo games are generally considered high quality and the Switch is considered a mobile console.

PC + Switch should be the default setup for a hardcore gamer.

PC + Switch + Playstation

Especially w/ Xbox and gamepass, no need for an Xbox.

Yeah, definitely won't be replacing my existing Switch for the OLED (I mainly play dock). Screen does look beautiful on this one though.

I don’t think that was ever going to be a thing. At 10w the cpu and processor budget that DLSS would consume would be better served by a node shrink moving to A72 cores, and a Pascel based GPU then taking that combined savings for a slight increase in clocks. That would give better overall performance and graphical quality than DLSS at 1080p would provide. There is no GPU/CPU combination on the planet that would give acceptable 4K performance even with DLSS at a 10w power budget. Even if they managed to up that to 15w with a larger battery and cooling that would still leave them some 50w shy of what’s needed with current tech.

Nintendo is taking the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" approach with regards to the OLED Switch. The Switch is still selling insanely well. I mean I am still surprised that there are AAA titles being ported over to Switch with no issue like Doom Eternal. So obviously the Switch has plenty of life in it as it is. With Nintendo as far as I am concerned it's always been about the games and not system specs. Nobody buys a Switch to play Doom Eternal, or whatever other AAA games are ported to it. People who buy the Switch want access to Nintendo's first party catalog and not to play the latest games in 4K so really this OLED switch is just Nintendo being Nintendo.

The version of Mario Kart on the Switch is still the same game as the WiiU version, Mario Kart 8. It came out in 2014.

And they didn't even sell an expansion for the Wii U version with the new Switch tracks. It was basically Nintendo saying, buy all new hardware and the $60 game again for what was a DLC pack... oh and slightly better graphics. At least Zelda ran better on the Switch I guess... though now you can play it on PC via an emulator better than Wii U or Switch.

I disagree man - Switch is not some amazing device - it's about the same level of horsepower that Sony would traditionally throw at their handhelds; Sony discontinuing portables left a wide-open field for Nintendo to dominate fully...however, the actual performance of Switch in portable mode is around the HD 520.

So, you've been able to leverage your existing Steam indie library on a $400 2015 laptop, while Nintendo is happy to charge you $300 for proprietary hardware plus charge you again for the same games, AND thanks to the the clunky-sized/ no integrated cover Switch, it makes a 13" Laptop seem more portable!

Did I mention that Steam allows you to stream the games from your PCs back at home? onto your phone or notebook!

Switch Lite is a better design, but the lock-downs make it worthless (for anyone looking to fix all he broken aspects of the Switch platform.)

I disagree.

There are two types of hardcore gamers. The kind that play one game at a time for thousands of hours and the kind that plays thousands of games but treats them as the flavor of the week.

Even for the second there are so many higher quality PC games they don't need a Switch or any console to keep them playing 24/7.

Can you play console games and still be a hardcore gamer? Absolutely. Is it required? HELL NO.

I bought a wii-u specifically for the new open world zelda game they promised, then they delayed and delayed it until i had to buy a switch to play it. Lame. But the point is, the Mario game that came on wii-u, was a bit fun, but boring. I think when i beat it my first time playing, i had like 75 lives queued up. The game was meant for children. Thats been their model ever since, they don't make games for adults who grew up playing SNES. Sucks.

Takes all kinds.

There's also the kind of gamers like me who has limited time, but owns and plays games across all platforms and genres (including Switch). I like gaming like I like music: all genres on different systems.

Except for Manga-inspired games, because that's hot trash.

Yeah you're a gamer and you really like gaming, but are you really a "hardcore gamer" if you barely play any games or even just an average amount? That seems more like an average gamer than hardcore gamer to me.

Like a lot of folks here, I used to be a "hardcore" gamer, then I graduated towards actually enjoying video games. I'm more interested in originality and "fun" now. Kind of like I use to play drums in a hardcore band, but now I enjoy all genres of music now.

Who the fuck cares about so called "hardcore" gamer. It is a entertainment hobbies. Unless you are competing as you full time jobs. I do critiques why people enjoy some games but who the hell am I to judge. Play what you enjoy. Except he Xbox. Fuck that thing. The only thing really gets under my skin are the losers that scream PCMR.

I have a 2012 vita
All you need now is a 2012 Vitara to play your 2012 Vita inside.

On a more serious note I always thought they had a decent screen so to learn the Vita was oled is surprising.

It's really just a way to gatekeep to feel better about themselves... and let's be honest, it's also a convenient way to discriminate against different cultural groups while pretending it's just about dedication and skill.

That's part of why I like the Switch. It's a giant middle finger to gatekeepers who think it's all about 'hardcore' gamers and having the best specs. They scratch their heads at the OLED model while people with healthy attitudes are wondering when they can get theirs.

and it's ONLY $300 ... wow toys sure have become super expensive these days

Had my Switch since launch and I've barely touched it. The games are overpriced and very "last gen". It's really just a toy for kids. If you find some extra value in it, that's cool, but that doesn't change what it is at It's core.

You literally have to have kid-sized hands to use the console for mobile use...

Your personal views don't apply to everyone. There are plenty of adults who enjoy playing on the Switch, including games aimed at adults; I'm six feet tall and don't have problems using the Switch in handheld mode.

You don't have to like the Switch, but please don't presume to speak for everyone else.

My decent size hands disagree with you.

You can also buy one of the many, many, many switch grips that's out there, such as:
https://www.satisfye.com/products/zengrip-pro

(Which is, in my opinion, the absolute best one. Stopped hand cramps during multi-hour sessions of Animal Crossing, Monster Hunter, etc. So very comfy.

Or even go all out and get something neat like the Hori Split Pad Pro:
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Split-Ergonomic-Controller-Handheld/dp/B08FJ7XY3B

Also, if your rebuttal is "you shouldn't need to buy extra peripheriphals to make it comfortable" i'm going to laugh at you posting that on a fucking computer hardware forum.

I sold my regular Switch a while ago, just have the Lite now. Don't play it too much, but there are some good games.

That said, I think my hand is still cramped from beating Panzer Dragoon Remake on that thing.

None of the other consoles or PC, can go handheld mobile. (and don't try to bring up those piece of shit chinese handheld PC abominations).

It has some excellent exclusive games, which are also of very different flavor than most anything you can get anywhere else. And that is something to appreciate. PS5, Xbox, and PC all share the same games. And a lot of the new stuff is questionable in its intent . I have a PS5 and like it. But I watched Sony's stream the other day and Deathloop interests me absolutely zero. A game all about full screen throat slitting and other various ways to chop up people....topped off with a constant stream of snarky snark dialogue. NAH, NO THANKS.

And for many people, its considered the best place to play indies----Which are on sale exactly as often as Steam. Disco Elysium releases soon on Switch and I don't doubt that will be an excellent place to play that game.

Its also a great place to play some remastered classics. The switch port is arguably the best way to play Okami, due to the touch screen. If I had not already had my fill of FF12----I would own the Switch version of that. Etc.

The GPD is actually pretty nice, as a concept, but it is too bulky to really be portable and expensive as all hell.

I'd probably play my Switch Lite more if I was travelling, but I basically haven't left the house in like a year and a half.

Even on the few trips I have taken, I just used my laptop to play some low-end games since I was trying to travel light.

Welcome, yet disappointing. I would pay $999 for an "adult" version of Nintendo hardware/software. They do realize we're all 40+ (4 O next week for me) now right? That were born into the NES?

They know we have disposable income and will buy for children, which is why stuff is so focused on kids. Hardly believe they released BOTW, I was not expecting that.

And I'll laugh at you because consoles aren't PCs. It might be convenient for you to make that sort of comparison when having to buy peripherals. But since you started it...

Why would anyone want to have to buy extra peripherals for an overpriced, tiny hunk of garbage with small overpriced library? Telling someone they just need to put a little extra spice on their turd sandwich isn't really a great argument. Adding grips doesn't change the fact that this is a console with a younger target audience than the other consoles, nor does it solve the million other problems with it.

But hey, cult of Nintendo.

Dude, I spent $150 on a fucking keyboard, then I liked it so much that I bought another one for my wife. Then she liked it so much that I bought another one for her cubicle at work.

I can spare $20 to make my switch, which I've played well over 3000 hours, be more comfortable. I love my switch, I've said before that it gets more play than my PC does currently. Your absolute lack of taste in videogames is not my problem.

I'm on vacation right now, and guess what's getting a ton of play while i'm stuck in my bed at my in-laws because they go to bed early? My switch. Wonderful console. My wife also has *her* switch and we can co-op Monster Hunter Rise, because, yet again, that's super easy to do and it's a fantastic co-op game that doesn't require both of us to be stuck at our gaming pcs at home to enjoy.

Switch is a cool console with some great looking exclusives, probably some of the best that have been on a Nintendo console since the Gamecube (with a few exceptions on Wii/Wii U). I was holding out for the rumored DLSS capable switch lol, but since that doesn't appear to be happening soon, I'll likely pick up a used current Switch to be played docked most of the time. The OLED screen sure would be nice though for people who game via the mobile config often.

What exactly are you looking for? Adult version of the software? I mean, you can't really make Mario a very mature game. Just never was, the whole premise is silly. If you're looking for a mature Zelda, recent Assassin's Creed games and Witcher 3 can fit into that. For platformer games you have stuff like Tomb Raider or Mirror's Edge. I'm just not seeing how you can max a game where you play as animals like Star Fox serious or mature.
