Official PS5 Thread

GameStop is saying the red and black ones drop today on their website. I wonder if the physical locations will have them.

It's a real longshot for me but I "might" be able to get a PS5 for myself before too long here. I have been keeping up with this thread and have noted some of the "technical issues" discussions. All told, what are we looking at here? Typical bugaboos?

All I can speak to is my experience, I’ve had mine since November. I’ve played every PS5 exclusive, and completed several PS4 games on the PS5 as well.

The sleep mode was borked for a long time, so I just stopped using sleep mode. A recent firmware update seems to have fixed that issue. I have not had any in game crashes what so ever. I did have one game that wouldn’t patch (Cyberpunk), but uninstalling the game and trying again fixed that issue.

If you have long gaming sessions (6-8+ hours), the controller battery may not make it through a complete session if the game uses a lot of vibration or adaptive trigger stuff. I noticed playing Ratchet and Clank A Rift Apart that my brand new black Dual Sense was almost out of juice after about 3-4 hours. However that game constantly modulates controller vibration, and every weapon uses the adaptive triggers. I’d recommend picking up the controller charging dock and a second controller if only for that reason. The controller is awesome otherwise, I’ve had no failures or drift problems.

I’ve been playing mine constantly for 3 months now (meaning I play for an hour or two a night, but haven’t touched my PC) and haven’t ran into a single issue. So far I’ve enjoyed this more than my PC upgrade but that’s because there’s a whole catalog of games that have opened up to me. I don’t regret the purchase one bit. Plays gloriously well on an OLED too.

Same here. Have had mine since launch in November hooked up to my C9 OLED as well. No issues here, either with noise or even the rest/standby issue and I have always kept my PS5 in rest mode while not in use.

Although I have a 2nd controller as well, it's not necessary even if you game for 6+ hours at once. The simpler and cheaper solution is to have a charger in or near your couch like I do for phones and laptops anyways. I just plug my controller into my phone charger and am still completely uninhibited by it while gaming since it's not like you have a long trip wire going to the console or something.

The only complaints I have are limited SSD storage and the lack of VRR still since my TV supports it via HDMI 2.1. But fortunately Sony recently allowed us to at least move PS5 games to external storage while we're not playing them now. Supposedly VRR will be added in an update later this summer last I heard.

I have been hearing that dual sense controllers don't play well with cellphone chargers. Especially high powered 'fast' chargers. charging with these can limit that battery potential.

as such, people whom had problems.with battery life, have reported much improvement, from using an official charger and/or charging from the usb ports on the rear of the PS5.

I've just been using a standard 10-15W (5V 2.4A) charger on mine with no issues after 9 months now. I don't like to use fast chargers even on my phones to limit battery wear. If you're paranoid about using unofficial accessories, then buy whatever licensed/official charger you want I guess to keep at your couch. I have a 2nd controller as a backup already and aren't really worried about it. Same with my Switch that is allegedly picky about chargers and docks that I haven't had any issues with using unofficial chargers and docks with.

IMO if Sony and Nintendo shouldn't be using a standardized USB C connection if they didn't intend for compatibility with the standard USB charging at least. Then they can add to that standard for additional functionality like Nintendo did with its dock. The only issues I've seen personally are using those Qualcomm proprietary quick chargers on the old Dual Shock 4 controllers that were killing the controllers. Nothing so far like that for the Dual Sense controllers.

I'm not saying it kills the controller. I'm saying you may not be getting a full charge to the battery,if you are using other stuff. I brought this up, because people here have talked about middling battery life on the dual sense.

I have seen multiple reports of people who were upset with the battery life of their dual sense controller. But experienced much improved battery life, after using an official charger or using the ports on the back of the PS5.

I've had a couple or so crashes. Both in spider man games I think. The original and miles morales. Seemed more like game bugs. In one of them I think the web hooked up to something ridiculously far away and the character started flying, camera ended up on the side of a building with the game crashed.

Another issue was a supposedly new copy of Ghost of Tsushima not installing. That seems like a disc problem but a lot of people reported similar with other games on ps5. Haven't managed to test the disc on a ps4.

Controller battery life is something i expected to be weaker with all the features. I turn off the mic on the controller by default now especially since I heard something like whining with it on (put controller to ear). I am not sure if the battery meter on the ps5 is accurate because sometimes it seems to not move and then I check later and its at 1 bar.

I’ve had my first PS5 for around 6-7 months and am using external SSD for PS4 games and haven’t had any issues whatsoever with anything including rest mode or games not installing or updating or etc. I played some Yuffie DLC last night for around 4 hours and controller was still half full. I’m using the official Sony charging stand.

I understand and am only saying I haven't had any issues with middling battery life while using a standard 10-15W charger near my couch, other than getting the rated 6+ hours of use out of it per charge while playing PS5 games that use the advanced haptics (which I see a lot of people still complain about being too short). My controller charges to full while still in use playing PS5 games using the advanced haptics and the aforementioned charger.

I don't believe the controllers have different charging capacities depending on what charger is plugged in either and would have to see something other than anecdotal claims like that to believe otherwise. Maybe different charging speeds, but not capacities. A quick search shows the controllers need a 5V 750ma charger and on Sony's support site:

You may also use a charger that is compliant with the USB standard if you have one available. Please note, not all USB chargers will be capable of charging the DualSense wireless controller.
I'm guessing the issues you speak of are from people using a weak sub 750ma charger or something if they're charging at all and not to full capacity while still in use.

Not sure if this has been stated already.

I recently found that the front USB-C port works the best for external NVMEs. The rear ports (USB-A) give horrible write speeds (below USB 2.0 with testing), while the front USB-C port is lightning fast (~10Gbps from what I can tell).

I've always charged my Dualsense through the USB-C port on the front of the console. The battery simply doesn't last that long. I can get 6-8 hours out of it compared to 20-30 with the Elite Series 2. It's a minor annoyance that honestly all wireless PlayStation controllers have suffered from since the Sixaxis.

Strange. Sony says the rear USB-A ports are SuperSpeed (10 Gbps). Maybe your external drive doesn't support full transfer speed when using a USB-A cable?

E3 revealed The Medium is coming to PlayStation 5 on September 3. Sony's next State of Play hasn't been announced yet, but Sony's new VR headset is expected to premiere there.

Why would anyone sign up for this? I am not taking any chances bricking my PS5 to beta test for Sony.

Microsoft rolled out a bunch of new features with theirs. Things like Atmos rolled out pretty far in advance of a major release. If you don't mind trying software that's buggy and unfinished (aka. you're a PC gamer), it's not that crazy.

Just give us the god damn enabled additional M2 drive already, fcken been months! Trash ass usuable 600GB ssd thats full when you install cold war and warzone.
VRR would be nice, too.
I doubt there many people really rushing to pay $2-400 for NVMe atm. I agree it should be there but the cost is ridiculous atm for the average consumer.
I was a sucker and immediately bought the Seagate one for my Series X :cautious:

I'd sign up for it to get VRR support finally if they roll that out early for the beta users.

I'm good with the small internal SSD now that we can transfer PS5 games to an external drive. I'm only going to play maybe 2-3 PS5 games (usually one at a time though) at once anyways. So I'll prolly wait until the gen 4 SSDs drop in price a bit more for a 2TB SSD to throw in there once more PS5 games are out and worth playing. If they hadn't given us that ability, I would be much more annoyed and be buying another SSD as soon as they let us.

I'm going to be a time machine for you guys here but I'll try not to bug you too much. No optical audio out. Do I see that right? Any workarounds? (Not a super big deal.) So far so good with everything.

Yeah, no optical. You'll need to use HDMI for audio or get a HDMI audio extractor (HDMI to HDMI & optical).

signed up for beta program, 1st update better be about nvme support so i can waste money on 2tb one
Yeah, that's why I signed up for it as well. Capped at PCIE Gen3 for my NVME but it'll still be faster than USB-C 10Gbps.

It is a cloud service like Stadia. You can play what ever games they offer on it. Last I heard it was pretty buggy.
