The cheapo gaming headset me 8 year old has just died. It is no longer detected by the computer.

I want to buy a new headset for him but want something that doesn't suck. Looking to spend around $50 max. Doesn't necessarily have to be brand new.

Ideas?

Bah.. looking at reviews upon reviews of headsets and the cheapo $20 set that broke after about a year gets overall better reviews than the more expensive ones.

I'm looking at the lower star reviews.

Guess I am just spoiled by my Senheiser Momentum with modmic 5.

I really just want something that sounds good and is good quality.. nothing super fancy.

Even the super expensive sets don't have really, really good reviews.

Maybe I should just look at getting a decent set of headphones and add a modmic.

Whatever you buy, watch out the volumes. I did the mistake of letting my son use a cheap in-ear headset while gaming and he destroyed his hearing for life. With bad headphones you crank up the volume without realizing.

And both of those have a decent number of bad reviews such as them stopping working or physically breaking in a few months.

Cooler Master:

Hyper X - pretty much all the models have very poor reviews from people that have had them break after a short while. Kingston will not honor the warranty even for stuff that came apart because of a poor gluing job.

Steelseries and Turtle Beach both have non-existent customer support from the reviews I looked at.

The immediate 4 and 5-star reviews mean absolutely nothing. Sure they may work great at first, but if they crap out after a short while then what is the point in even buying them in the first place?

All this plastic crap is stupid as well. Gimme something that doesn't easily break where the earpiece adjusts or swivels.

I've probably spent 6-8 hours looking at reviews for a ton of different products. I keep going back to wanting to buy an actual good set of cans and an add-on mic.

for you or the 8 year old?

The 8 year old... I just don't like stuff that breaks. No point to keep buying stuff that just breaks. Ends up costing more in the long run.

I already have a nice setup for myself. Depending on what I end up getting though, it might be a slight upgrade for me and then have him use my current Sennheiser Momentum 1.0 around-ear cans.

I could just make him use my ancient Pioneer SE-505 cans.. but those are a bit heavy even for me after a while.

For an eight year old, I recommend approaching the purchase as disposable.

They're gonna break.

Maybe. The pair he had for about the last year didn't physically break. They are actually still in really good physical condition. They just stopped working. They get unplugged and stay on the desk when not being used.

Well, ended up finding a second hand pair of Sennheiser HD630vb for $100. So much for me wanting to spend a max of $50.

Kiddo will end up using my Momentum cans for the computer which fit him really well anyway.

Momentums for an 8 year old? Keep that up, and he's gonna be hitting on that Sennheiser HE1/Orpheus in another 20 years or so ... :p

On a more serious note, the HD 630VB is a criminally underrated headphone (been using mine for 3+ years). Great buy!

Haha. When I was a kid, my Dad had and I think still has a pair of white Sennheiser HD 414 headphones. The first pair of headphones I bought myself as a pre-teen/teen were Radio Shack Optimus Pro 25. Probably used Christmas or birthday money. Rocked those with a Sanyo cassette/AM/FM walkman which had really, really clean output and was way overpowered. Was a sad day when the driver on one side of the headphones blew out.

I saw that set of HD 630VB and read pretty much all the real reviews as well as the Amazon reviews before I pulled the trigger. Can't wait for them to get here!

Eight year olds don't care. What's more important is that they like it... usually based on looks. Let them pick it out.

I got my kid a set of Corsair HS45 from Best Buy for around $40 if I remember right. They sound pretty good, have a good microphone and have lasted which says a lot because my spoiled rotten brat doesn't take care of his stuff. They're not the cheapest but they have a good build quality and good performance.

I personally use Hyper X Cloud Alpha that run $100 and I think they're about the best headset dollar for dollar. The sound quality is excellent as is the mic performance and they're by far and away the most comfortable cans I've ever used. Granted I've never used the really high end stuff (~$300) but I can't imaging them being more comfy. But $100 might be a little too much to spend on a 13 year old.

Razer Kraken X?
from Best Buy:
White set- $50
Black set- $60

If they are like my kraken 7.1's in terms of build/sound. I am a fan of them.. Only thing I didn't like is the flaking of the pleather after several years of use. My kids now use them (14/15). Only real reason I replaced was I wanted wireless.

my kid used to have LilGadgets Untangled Pro for several years (here they are)
it's 50$, but wireless

Just wanted to post an update. My kiddo is using the Senheiser Momentum 1.0 with the modmic 5 just fine. Took a bit to get him to put them away after using them but all is fine now.

Was looking for a good add-on mic for the HD630VB but it turns out the in-line mic works just dandy for gaming so we are all set for now.

I also picked up a pair of Momentum 2.0 over ears so I have a spare set as well. They fit me better than the 1.0 set since the ear cups are slightly larger.

Apart from the mic, how are you liking the HD630VB?

I like them a LOT. The variable bass adjustment doesn't do whole lot but it is useful. If it is turned all the way up, the sound does get a bit muddy, but below that it is fine. I usually have it set at around 50-75%.

The sound coming out of them is much more detailed than the Momentum. When I first got them, I ended up listening to some songs multiple times.. swapping back and forth and finding that there is a whole lot that is output with the HD630VB that is completely absent on the Momentums.

They are also very comfortable.

I was able to get a Sennheiser PC37X for $60 during a sale a couple months ago. I can highly recommend it and I wouldn't be surprised if it's $50 towards the end of the month.
