Just saw mention of GOG layoffs. I don't like the sound of that. I don't generally like to be alarmist, and they are backed by CDPR, but I may just download all my GOG content to an external SSD I have laying around doing nothing. I mainly use GOG for old DOS games anyway, but have probably 80 total games in there. I don't like seeing any signs of wavering where my hosted data is concerned. Good thing they're DRM-free I guess. I hope they turn around. Maybe CDPR will pump some Cyberpunk money into GOG when it's released.
 
Yeah I saw that. I recently grabbed a copy of my GOG stuff. Even if they close I'm sure we would have a notice.

Imagine if Steam closed ...

Yeah, I'm sure there would be a notice, a sizable uproar, etc. :D

Now if Steam closed, they better strip all their games' DRM, or the world may implode.

The risk isn't Steam closing. They have more money than they know what to do with. The risk is them getting bought by someone who decides to be evil about shit. Newell will retire or die some day and when he sells it off, it'll be a bidding frenzy with people like MS, Sony, Apple, EA, etc all trying to get it. When one of them does, well, who knows what they'll do? I could see a subscription fee to access your content becoming a thing.

That will in fact be a sad day if it were to happen. Disgusting. Yuck... If I had to pay a subscription to use games I already bought licenses for, I'd be pretty pissed. That would be the day I just stopped any form of mainstream PC gaming.

As it stands right now, my gaming is probably 80% indie, 10% Nintendo first party, and 10% PC AAA. So, I'm becoming less and less impacted by this sort of thing over the years it seems naturally through my shifting gaming habits. The only big releases I look forward to anymore are obscure things like Atomic Heart, or things like Doom, Quake, Rage, or Arkane games. Half the franchises that I used to like have fallen apart or died off. (when's the last time an SSX game came out for example, and Mass Effect is pretty dead despite a recent rumor about it making a return sometime) The landscape has changed drastically for me.

I get more excited about things like Dead Cells than I would if HL3 came out.

I still hate to see things like this happen though. GOG are some of the good guys. Despite some flaws, I still feel like Valve are too (though sometimes a bit misguided I think.) Oh well, I guess we'll see what happens. I can just take a wee bit of solace in that I should still be able to get the types of things I actually play more. Still sucks for the people chomping for the latest AAAs though if that were to happen.

And this why I don't buy games from steam. Give me DRM free or nothing. GOG is the where I buy my games. Even if they go out of business, the games are owned by me and can be downloaded locally
