The Dot is one of the most useful of all the Echo's. It has a golden feature most of them do not - A Stereo Minijack output. As best I can remember, only the Dot and the Spot have this.

The others have BlueTeeth's, but... yuk, right?

If you've wanted to delve into the world of Alexa, here's a great chance to do so.

Pair this up with an inexpensive set of speakers, such as the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's, and an Amazon Music account (or Prime account) and you have one hell of a little music station.

If I didn't already have them scattered all over the house, I'd be all over this one.

I have a Spot (has 3.5" screen) on my work desk and it's awesome. I'd like another one for the bedroom to replace the current Dot, but not until they go on some sort of ridiculous sale such as this.

Thanks, Larry. So tempted to jump on this...

As a side note, the 3rd Gen is $30, or get 2 for $50, right now. For those wanting two or more, can't go wrong with either the 2G or 3G model.

That might be an even better deal. I do not know the differences between the Gen 2 and 3.

I do know the Gen 2 has a by-god awesome gizmo for plugging it into the wall. A genuinely brilliant thingamabob:

Gen 3 has a farrrrrrrr better speaker built in and is a little bigger. Both have headphone jacks. If you are connecting to an external setup like Tech Larry is advising the onboard speaker is of no concern. I have both dots. For $5 more it’s worth the better speaker of the gen 3.

Agree. If you use it as a speaker get Gen3, otherwise save 5 bucks. I intend to use one with my stereo and a Harmony Elite (though more than likely I'm not picking that up until next month).

For use strictly as an input device you can use this version of the echo for $20

Why would anyone want this is beyond me. Why’d You pay to have a spying device installed in your house? Seriously, why?

I had the same thoughts but using one in the home gym for voice control of music while I work out is pretty nice. I just hit a wall switch to kill the power to it when not in the gym so it can't listen.

Because we live in the United States where the government doesn’t have any reason — or desire to come snuff me out in the middle of the night? I don’t do anything in my house I’m afraid for my government to hear about — assuming they do actually listen. I don’t care.

If that changes( I don’t trust my government and safety based on my personal discussion), then I’ll change my stance.
