Recommend a good gaming wifi router

My Netgear WNDR3800 just stopped working a couple weeks ago after about 7 years. It had good wifi coverage and good wired performance for multiple gaming PCs.

I bought a $100 Linksys EA7300 because it was an emergency (I work from home, internet HAS to be on) and I'm extremely disappointed with the performance.

My wife gets horrible, inconsistent wifi on her Iphone 8 (she's 1 room away)

If I download anything on Steam, the ping for everyone goes up +200ms

I don't get why a 7 year old router handled these basic tasks just fine, but a brand new mid range router gets choked out when you ask it to do a couple sit-ups.

I can still return it and get something better, but all the routers seem to have 3.5-4 stars on Amazon and often it's an aggregate of 5 models so you can't tell if one is a stinker and one is really good.

Newegg has a $50 gift card with the purchase of the XR500 right now - I'm this close to pulling the trigger

Look at 'all reviews' on Amazon and you can dial in the specific model, and sort for most recent. Just had to do that with hard drives to ex-out the ones with lots of recent failures and/or noise.

Also: the ER-X from Newegg for US$38 shipped and the airCube from Amazon for US$80 shipped.

Both of these are UNMS (not Unifi), so they each have their own internal persistent config available, while also being available for being added to a UNMS management instance on network if desired.

While providing discrete, wide-range dual-band access.

I suspect you have a lemon, not typical of that models performance.

Anything is possible, but wifi performance on my Note 8 has never been an issue - it's mostly showing up on the Iphone 8.

Also, why would the router choke on one PC downloading from Steam? We have 100Mbps internet and the download was maybe 25Mb/s. I played with the QoS settings but nothing really had an effect.

Do routers made on a Monday morning by hungover factory workers really manifest latency issues like that?

I ordered the XR500...
