Facial Recognition Technology Needs Government Regulation According to Microsoft

A Microsoft blog called out elected governmental officials to draft laws that would regulate the usage of facial recognition technology. They stressed the need for the development of norms based on acceptable uses. Microsoft gave examples such as government tracking of citizens over the course of months, stores tracking shoppers every visit to see which shelf they visited without notifying them of the surveillance and more. Also the technology exhibits bias in certain body features so it could create a society where certain groups are targeted because they are simply easier to track. Lastly Microsoft doesn't feel tech companies should be the ones making the rules as some have suggested.

Even if biases are addressed and facial recognition systems operate in a manner deemed fair for all people, we will still face challenges with potential failures. Facial recognition, like many AI technologies, typically have some rate of error even when they operate in an unbiased way. And the issues relating to facial recognition go well beyond questions of bias themselves, raising critical questions about our fundamental freedoms.
Perhaps as much as any advance, facial recognition raises a critical question: what role do we want this type of technology to play in everyday society?

As reported widely in recent months, biases have been found in the performance of several fielded face recognition technologies. The technologies worked more accurately for white men than for white women and were more accurate in identifying persons with lighter complexions than people of color.

So the solution is to make it work bad for everyone equally. Sounds about right.

Regulation for who? Private individuals? LMFAO.

You think the government or big business is going to follow any kind of "rules"? Think again. Maybe in the European Union where they actually take care of their citizens in regards to privacy but never ever in America.

It's a matter of time before A.I. in conjunction with Tech / Cloud and High-Definition cameras will be able to not only find someone, anyone, but learn of peoples daily habits and routines. From smoking to walking with a gimp leg to rubbing yourself in some random public park looking at soccer moms. That is never ever going to go away. Microsoft is delusional on top of giving lip service to the general public.

They can already do this. But the tech is only going to become more advanced, further reaching on top of becoming very wide spread and invasive.

I've seen articles where they can use harmless lasers to accumulate data. It's just a matter of time before the government and large corporations can build a profile on you outside your phone, computer or living room that can follow you from your home, to work, to the gym, to the airport, microcenter, gas-station to out of town, out to the country, out of state.

The Government is not going to throw this ability away and while I'm sure we will see a multitude of laws in the coming years, we all know how well those "laws" and "promises" are kept.

So Microsoft calls for the people that would abuse it and not follow regulation (government) would be the ones to regulate it. This is a trend in the tech industry lately, tech companies binding together to call for more regulation and government control, pretty thinly veiled orchestration.

They know damn well that any regulation would only apply to private citizens, and that government and private business directed by government would use and abuse this, outside of any regulation.

This is nothing but a further push for tyranny.

Exactly. This is Microsoft paying lip service to weak minded individuals. "oh, look at that .. Microsoft must really care about it's customers!" ............... "such a great forward thinking company!"
