HELP!!! Very BIG Outlook & Google Problem

A good friend has upgraded his laptop from a Win7 w/ Office 2007 to a new Win 10 Pro w/Office 2016. He uses Outlook to keep track of all emails from multiple accounts with Google being one. He has 37,000 emails, most with pictures,etc. for his business.
In the process of importing his Outlook 2007 .pst file into Outlook 2016 all of the gmail emails re-populate back onto the gmail server. About half way through the import, the process stops because the gmail server is maxed out, so the import process is terminated.
Does anyone know how to prevent the re-population of the gmail server????????
 
Remove the gmail account from the Outlook profile. May need to sign into gmail via browser and remove a few things to free up space.
 
The import is with a pristine install of Outlook. No accounts set up at all. Gmail account has been accessed and everything deleted prior to the import. During the import the gmail account is created by the pst file and the gmail server gets re-populated automatically.
Need to know how to stop this during the import!
 
If there are no accounts setup, how is the client connecting to a mail server? Have you tried disconnecting from the internet or disconnecting Outlook to work offline. Create a new PST and move the gmail stuff into a new PST.
 
I think you need to help your friend realize email is not a place to store photos.

You know how irritating it is to get a request from someone that demands the ability to send a 200MB attachment through email?
 
It took over a year & a half to convince him to back them up to an external drive. He claims he needs to access them all and hasn't got the patience to sort and catalog any of it!
 
The only way I was able to fix this issue(new Outlook with Google Apps for Work accounts), was to set up a seperate profile for the legacy .PST and then import the gmail into its own profile. This tool was very helpful when doing it. Also set your IMAP timeout higher.

Not only this, but he needs to learn how to manage his profile. Everything in one bucket, never deleting anything, and storing attachments are all terrible habits that WILL bite you in the ass eventually.
