ST3000DM001-9YN166 3TB on a Win 10 machine

Randomly, my E drive disappeared from Windows. A few reboots and no change. I switched SATA ports and noticed a red light on the board that I don't recall being lite before. After reboot, the disc mounted but all sorts of I/O issues as I browsed files. Then, it stopped functonaling all together nearly a complete lock of the machine. I rebooted and disc is gone. Unfortuantely, I am using NETGEAR ReadyShare Vault to backup my files but it didn't backup up my financial document encrypted by VeraCrypt properly. I see the file on disc but the software won't restore the file properly. Any advice? Should I try a USB enclosure?
 
Data recovery service and better due diligence when backing up files.

Any damage to the drive can result in permanent loss of data.
 
Package it? It's just sitting in the machine. It isn't being thrown around. Package it for?
 
He's telling you that you are probably boned and recommending that you send it in to be recovered... $$$$$

Rule #1 in computing - Your data is only as good as your last backup
 
USB will lock up even worse, it goes nuts with I/O errors. The only thing left is the freezer trick and you have about 15 minutes before it reaches room temperature and the head may collide with the platter. If you know exactly where the file is and how to get it copied as quickly as possible, I had luck with two drives in the past but since then it has not worked. Recovery services may be the only option and they cost between 1200 and 2k..
 
Did you try a different sata cable? those things can break, does not happen often but it's easy enough to try.

On the other hand If the drive is making lot's of noise it's probably on it's way out and will have to resort to a recovery service.
 
I will try a different SATA cable. I thought enclosure would help as I could play around with connecting/disconnecting without needing to open the case and boot up the PC to see if I can get a few necessary files off the drive. No noise though which is what I was expecting. Ironically, when Win 10 did recognize the drive for a few minutes, Disc Manager utility said it was healthy :(
