So, I had an old system with a GTX1060 video card and an even older monitor which was a 7 yeat old Hyundai 24 1920x1200 TN display.
I decided to get a new monitor and originally thought of just going with an Acert 25" IPS as a "for now" monitor.
But once I started looking, the decision was bewlderingly complex. WQHD? UHD? WQHD 144hz GSync? IPS TN VA
It is just incredibly confusing.
If I got a 4K monitor could my 1060 run it ok? Would 1080P upscaled look OK on UHD? Would just a higher refresh monitor be better?
Well, I am not a "twitch gamer". I don't really play FPS shooters, and have no interest in many of the newer products like Battlefield and Call of Duty, etc... I play MMOs, RPGs , ARPGS like POE and Grim Dawn and strategy games.
My suspicion was that my 1060 would be OK for UHD "for now" but would need a new video card in time.
So I settled on getting a UHD display. After a bunch of research I decided that 27" is really too small for a UHD monitor, but without spending $1000 choices in the 32" range basically came down to the LG 32UD59.
I happened to get a great deal at Frys, for $398 and they paid tax so with the recycling fee $404 total.
From the reviews it seemed like I was entering a bit of a "panel lottery" situation. Saw lots of posts and reviews with issues with backlight bleed, terrible uniformity, red push, etc...
Well I have none of those. Incredibly uniform, no dead pixels, accurate looking colors (once I disabled black stabilizer), very very little if any backlight bleed.
I did notice the off angle color shuift, but at 41" from me, that is gone and I can see the entire screen without panning.
The display is glorious for me. Now ANYTHING would have been a gigantic upgrade over an 8 year old TN display, and I am sure there are better monitors out there but it looks spectacular.
Maybe even better than my 55" Samsung TV for video.
Upscaled 1080P content looks great.
The desktop is perfect.
Games are incredible. I can play almost all of my core games at 45-60 FPS in UHD, which is fine for now. I can even get a steady 45 FPS in Witcher 3 at UHD which looks incredible. WOW is AWESOME in 4K
Funny thing is though that maybe the biggest thing I notice is that text is so much better. Even in games text is super clear and legible.
Thought id share in case anyone else with marginal video card is on the fence. I know that there are many of gamers in the minimum 120Hz camp or unplayable camp but for me 45-60 FPS in UHD for the types of games I play is a revelation.
