Someone is out to cause issues for the Winter Olympic games. This malware, dubbed Olympic Destroyer by Talos Intelligence, has been deleting shadow copies of network mapped data and was looking to knock the Olympic website offline. It is still unknown how the attack was distributed. While no one is saying it, it looks to be somewhat of an "inside job," as the author of the attack knew user names, domain names, server names, as well as passwords.

During destructive attacks like this there often has to be a thought given to the nature of the attack. Disruption is the clear objective in this type of attack and it leaves us confident in thinking that the actors behind this were after embarrassment of the Olympic committee during the opening ceremony.

Would anyone have noticed?

Personally I've never really given the Olympics much attention...even so, I've noticed that this time around, everyone seems even more ambivalent than normal. What gives? Are the events just too specialized? Perhaps "one-footed, left-handed snowboarding" was a tad too specific for mass appeal? :p

Why is any of those systems on the internet? Why are any of them allowed to get out at all? Why are they not locked down tighter than the DMZ? I wonder who is the consultant company for IT infrastructure at the games.

Conservatives will claim it was NK, while the liberals will claim it was Russia.

3, 2, 1, ... FIGHT!

I'd be happy if someone took away the winter olympics. Winter sports are the most unwatchable uninteresting sports to follow. I recognize their achievements, but please don't make me watch it.
