dual power supplies

im about to ask what im sure is the stupid question of the day....

most guides call for two power supplies the more cards you have and use a paperclip to do so.

what happens if you leave the GPU power supply on and remove the MoBO power completely?

im talking you have the risers and GPU’s powered and simple remove the other end of the USB cable from the motherboard

i guess i was thinking the motherboard provided some type of grounding for the cards

with this logic, could one have a single PSU and two motherboards? say a 1000w PSU running all the cards and two 400w PSU running the motherboards?

lol... who knew!

im more looking to conserve ports on the 1000x PSU which is why I'm brining in the idea of 1 PSU to power a single MoBO and let the other PSU power the MoBo.

It's a lot easier to do it this way. Otherwise, I guess you could get a wire tap and hardwire the thing. Which is great for the long term though.

Easiest I think is to use the server PSU's with a breakout board. Use a Pico PSU from aliexpress for an extra $20 to power the board

at times I find that I turn off the MoBo PSU and the GPU PSU is still powering the fans. this is my concern overall all

You'll want make sure both PSUs are off before you do any work. There are still signal grounds between the risers and the motherboards and doing something wrong can cause power to flow in unexpected ways.
