If you are a science buff, which many of you nerds are, I highly suggest taking some time with the video below. The Muskrat is talking about some of the goals we will have to cross before turning Mars into the new Australia. You know, a space prison. Thanks talk2troy.

Check out the video.

This week at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Adelaide, Australia, SpaceX CEO and Lead Designer Elon Musk will provide an update to his 2016 presentation regarding the long-term technical challenges that need to be solved to support the creation of a permanent, self-sustaining human presence on Mars.

Hmm, now you're on to something. Prisoners to space - let them atrophy and become super weak, save on security guards!

Ima spoil it. It'll take you longer to watch the whole 43 minute presentation than it would take you to travel to Tokyo from NYC (or anywhere to anywhere on the planet) on a proposed SpaceX "BFR" transport.

Whilst Australia was set up by Convicts, it is interesting to see what the top 10 crimes were for being shipped to Australia
1) Petty theft
2) Burglary or housebreaking
3) Highway robbery
4. Stealing clothing
5. Stealing animals
6. Military offences
7. Prostitution
9. Political protest
10. Assault
T0day Australia is one of the safest places on Earth. Murder rates are similar to the UK for example. The USA is a third world country by comparison.
So maybe it would be better to settle Mars using Convicts of the type sent to Australia rather than 'free' settlers of the type sent to the USA.

I have more faith he'll pull this off than I have in any NASA program, because it's Musk's money, he's got enough ($21 billion), and he's having fun spending it. I'm guessing he read "The Man Who Sold the Moon" as a kid. :)

By comparison, Gates is wasting his money on 3rd world charity projects that don't mean shit to me, and don't give me hope for the future of mankind.

Nope. The top crime was being poor. After that, the second crime was being Celtic.

The top crime was being poor.
Here in the USA it still is ...

it's his money; he can spend it any way he sees fit. In general, people love to lord it over others - it's in our nature to do so (it needs to be changed for sure, but it is our natural born nature)

Look at what groups are committing the most crimes in America, it's not the descendants of the typical European settlers.
I'd be willing to bet, that if America still mainly consisted of British settlers, the crime rate would be much lower.

Ah, Musk, the true visionary and bringer of thruths and progress for the whole humanity. He really overreaches more and more lately, but I guess inflated ego destroys any breakes one should have.

I hope there will be hyperloop Eart-Mars travel.

I don't know, down here in Rustbeltistan it's all "European" druggies stealing homes and then burning them to the ground to destroy evidence, happened to an acquaintance last year that just retired. It's a common thing, drug epidemics and arson with some homicides for sprinkles. And rampant prostitution and abuse of course.

Seems the main crime factors are a mix of poverty, population density dynamics and lacking social programs to me.

As Mark Twain puts it, referring to a sister state:
"When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Kentucky because it's always twenty years behind the times"

It seems that way to what you've been told, but when you actually look at the data, the crime rates / success rates / whatever factor don't correlate. You're forced to bring in some immeasurable term/concept that explains away the huge difference, while being blind to the reality that is shown globally. But hey, +1 points for actually dropping the "they need more programs" line.

lol you have to laugh at whoever the retard who thought of this, probably one of those man-child star trek fans who have no idea whatsoever about evolution and design, yeah we can go near as we can also put a monkey or a cat in there, it doenst mean we are like, a "Multiplanetary Species" lol

*didnt watched the video :p

He seems to be very nervous !!!

He is always like that... often makes me wonder if he is just a pretty puppet.

That is a fantastic quote. I'm going to go look for some land in KY.

You have to start somewhere boss.

They also thought the Horse and carriage would never be replaced by something better(cars).

Nobody knows what the future holds, and you cannot achieve big things if you don't think big!

I don't want to carry this distraction from the topic too much further, so last one before allowing the thread get back on track hopefully:

Some of these nations you criticize had fountains and street lamps when we were languishing for centuries in the dark ages; things change all the time with politics and empires, could be our turn next when China is in charge.

Selective history aside, many of the people that come here are our professors, doctors, engineers and CEOs, they keep our country moving forward, we constantly stay ahead through this practice of importing great minds partially because we can't be arsed to study the sciences when plumbing jobs pay just as well, why bother right?

At least that's how it is around here, our local university's graduate engineering program is almost all Chinese, Indians and Africans, last I checked we had 1 out of 15 that were American.

Obviously there's nothing special about European heritage, it helps immensely for children to grow in a stable family environment, and on the social side not cultivate lazy asses with apathy toward education - a local epidemic here.

Wow +2 for stereotypical statements. I suppose your "selective history" ignores global history of slave trade, and probably also ignores countries that still have slave trade as well. And as far as immigration of "educated" people from questionable countries, yes, I'm sure that a brain drain of the places that need them most is highly beneficial to all parties in the long run too, right?

https://www.globalslaveryindex.org/findings/

But yeah, European heritage is completely meaningless and "nothing special has come from it", all that society and invention and progress and furthering of human rights are just happen-chance that any other region was totally on the verge of attaining themselves...until the evil europeans came and stopped them from doing it, obviously.

Obviously, there is nothing of worth from continuing to value european heritage, because a tiny percent of the people we import from other less developed regions of the world just barely match our standards! That other 99.9% and their 9 children will probably catch up...given you provide them enough social programs, obviously.

Funny how the crime rate was much lower during the 1930's depression when there was much more poverty.

Where I live, a lot of crime is to people supporting their drug addiction.
As for poverty, it's not a direct cause. People who are too lazy to finish school or work hard at a job tend to be poor, and then use their excuse of being poor to commit crimes.

As for social programs, they general don't help the crime rates because it's never enough money. It breeds laziness and a causes a lack of respect or other peoples property, which is another root cause of crime.

"When we first started development of the world's first bonfire(...)" stopped right there.

kidding

Nope. More like the real world version of "fast travel" that we have in games.

However, it will be probably priced for the 1% & require some medical / physically capable ID card.

Some of you guys need to join GenMay so you can talk about this further in the Soapbox...

https://hardforum.com/account/upgrades

Lets be honest, there would have to be a series of events take place before it would end up in Soap Box. President Trump would have to call the residents of Martians aliens. Washington Post would then have to run an article giving 7 reasons why Martians are just as much Earthlings as you and I, and finally Maxine Waters and Al Green would have to introduce impeachment proceedings for President Trump calling Martians aliens. Only THEN would it show up in Soap Box.

I just brought it up because they are talking about stereotypes & only allowing people of euro-heritage to participate, drug addiction, 1930's depression, etc.

I'm just saying that they might enjoy soapbox - I'm not saying this thread should be soap'd

I support this....we need some more flair in there. If you like to rock the boat, the Soapbox wants needs you!

i think the most corret analogy would be the caveman talking to his caveman children inside a cave looking at the fire light and saying about how in the future it will have these magic carriages and we will be able to travel and colonize space because as the primitive man he is he has no understanding of how life evolution and design is because all he has as base for his primitive caveman-like thoughts for intelligence is himself and the beasts that roam his land :p

He seems really uncomfortable during this speech. Maybe being in front of large groups makes him uncomfortable. Maybe his speech impediment simply gives this allusion of being uncomfortable even when he's not. I don't think it takes away from his message (let alone his proven leadership abilities), just takes away from the engagement of the video.

If it is the speech impediment, I can understand this difficulty, having a speech impediment myself. I'm just curious regarding his seemingly-uncomfortable delivery.

I could be way off, but if you think about the situation, there is reason for Elon to be extra nervous about this reveal. What he is doing may put strain on the confidence of investors, and there may still be an option for them to rescind a significant portion of their support and steer the company to a safer future. Consider this: his business model is working and his investors are looking forward to long term returns. And then Elon realizes that immaturely reaping the rewards of this business model would both stifle and prolong the greater goal. There are still massive inefficiencies to exploit in rocket technology, regardless of the advancements made thus far. He's taking a risk by grabbing the reins from the happy investors and levering this whole project up a notch and effectively back into a very large-scale, 21 billion dollar "startup" mode. Surely some of the earlier investors did not sign up for another round of risk and additional instability -- I'm not sure about last summer's investments. I figure that Elon is desperately trying not to sound like the maniac he imagines some may see him as. He's got courage and confidence, but that means nothing if you can't place it in others.

Notice that wistful moment he had thinking about how SpaceX almost failed 9 years ago? It's that day all over in his head. So long as we don't judge a person on quirks like that or take 'shortcuts' to streamline decisions and judgement. In the end it's what you do not what you say.
