Vega Rumors

How does 300 or more watts help them meet their claimed efficiency gains over Polaris?

There'd be a lawsuit if they released a beast like that.
I don't see a watercooled card using 375w. Those are max board power numbers.

Anarchist4000 Did you know that both the watercooled and air cooled cards have 2 8pin power connectors ? Two boards with same exact dual 8pin config... one with 375w, the other 300w... Same clocks... If they are simply stating the maximum power based on the configuration, then why does it differ between two identical cards?

Can you not even come up with something other than half-assed bullshit for once?
Perhaps because one is designed not to pull power through the motherboard and PCIe connector?

Don't be shocked when your 375W part ends up pulling 250w while being significantly faster than Titan.

And what half assed bullshit? You linked a document clearly showing what I stated. Yet it's invalid because you would rather compare apples and oranges?

Not sure why AMD would compare a Pro card to a gaming card - other then they would look terrible if they did. Now who in the world would pre-order one of these other than someone who has money to gamble with?
It's a gaming development product though. The name states "Frontier Edition" because it's for developers needing the cutting edge features to code against. Nobody wants that for CAD software development. Although they could update the CAD software. For deep learning and Pro there is Instinct and the WX lines. Titan comparisons make sense, but not with pro benchmarks.

We'll see come benchmark time I suppose, but that was the point.. if they can't make their efficiency claim stick when they are the ones that put it out there, there's going to be hell to pay. So given that- I think the max average at their claimed efficiency gain can be calculated.

Did they make even a single one?

A single what ? Card? Goal? Claim?

Oh I got excited we got info on the gaming card. Trying to hold judgement until I see reviews.

I might be interested in a better card for VR...

So you're saying AMD is trying or has created a new market segment? Why not just use a gaming card for that? Then turn around (AMD) saying the gaming cards will be faster than the FE?

FE looks like it has one advantage over the gaming cards and that is more VRAM or what AMD renamed Cache. So the FE is not for professionals in the traditional realm but for game developers and the Instinct ones are for AI and not necessarily for Quadro comparisons. Wait, all the pro cards are designated Quadro competitors but Vega Frontier Edition. . .

Ok if Vega Frontier Edition is compared to the Titan Xp then that is AMD's top gaming card as in like the Titan is for Nvidia. Meaning the rest of Vega's will be slower. That makes sense. AMD just trying to say it is special when it is the exact same chip using same HBM is somewhat laughable. It is the Titan Xp competitor in the market and AMD choose to run non-games to compare to it , I wonder why?

If it was for game creation then why not have game comparison benchmarks against the Titan? Vice something not even related to gaming? hmmmm

Really I think the report or rumor falls short in explaining anything and we just have to wait for the real information to shift through all the particulars. We may be jumping way too fast to conclusions. So maybe it will not stink as bad as a turd in the end. :D

Well they are trying to spin it, just like nV did with Titan Xp cost amounts, "pro sumer" prices ;)

We may know now the fastest speed Vega version , which looks to be around 1600mhz. Decent improvement in speed with other refinements it should do well but does not look like a Pascal killer by no means and may not even be the fastest card in end which being over a year late is not saying to much and won't really be that competitive to Volta. Unless AMD is holding back game benchmarks for the big surprise and show new improvements. In the end we just keep waiting for the light of Day or light of Vega.

Love comments like this. It's a product, not a cure for cancer, no one died waiting for it. I really don't think it matters where it falls in the high end, as long as it does. Everyday someone gets on this thread desperate for something that will let them up their Freesync game. Declaring it a pre -review failure before the sales numbers roll in when it's on the shelves seems a little narrow. Maybe it's not the tech you dreamed of, don't buy it. Don't like the color red? don't buy it. Don't like me? don't buy it.

The fact is if it's anywhere near competitive, they'll sell enough to tide them over until they can get something better out the door. Hopefully it will shake up some pricing between the two corps as well. The 3870 disgusted me, but man it sure paved the landscape with price drops.

Smart people just bought the high end and have already been enjoying their 1080 and up cards and reaping a high level gaming experience. No one was harmed in the Vega development cycle except maybe a few wallets while shelling out for the what is effectively, the current monopoly.

If the thing crunches numbers well and can be de tuned, the miners will snag them all anyhow. You won't even have to worry about it.

It goes back to the original Titan. It was touted as a Prosumer card and kind of created the segmentation. I say this goes back to the Produo fury and they marketed it the same way: as a game developer card that is like the merging of both worlds, Radeon and Firepro.

I hope also it shakes things up for Price/$ and us FreeSync owners having a good upgrade path.

So smart people only enjoy their cards 1080 and up? lol. Some smart folks snagged Fury's for less than $250 and others good priced 480's1060's and so on. Smart folks fall in all sorts of categories but I am drifting. Anyways looks like FE Vega is the top dog in the chain which is also confusing since Raja indicated the gaming cards will be faster. Since most of talk on this thread lately is just from one source dealing with the FE it is probably prudent just to see the official launch and reviews show. Then that takes the fun out of a rumor thread would it not? Oh the pain . . .

Well I was also hoping for faster gaming cards. Then again we don't know the performance of the FE Vega anyways, except maybe some professional benchmarks if source is accurate. If it is 50% faster than Fiji then it will be right around the 1080Ti performance level, a little bit less.

Let's hope it's only 1080 level performance. If it's better than that, I couldn't stand the AMD trolls raving..................

If Vega it's at least as good as the 1080Ti, Then Nvidia would put even more time and effort into there next gen cards. I'm sure the we will see exactly that from Intel, now that RyZen is competitive. And we also have Threadripper to come. Its good for us, the consumer. Wanting Vega to fall just makes no sense at all.

That's not drifting, it's trolling and twisting my words, I mentioned 1080 's and up because that's where AMD is absent.

And when did I say it was a cure for cancer? Twisting my words or trolling? Chill man.

Well you clarified your thought about smart folks just now. I can't read minds hence question mark about your 1080 remark. I did not call it a failure either.

Have a great day.

Wow dude, I didn't attribute those words to you specifically anywhere but to the entire gamut of silly "where's the vega" "it's already dead" "They'll never sell any" posts in general. Because that's how it works.

GPU prices are going up because of mining.
It's affecting Nvidia too, people are selling their AMD cards and buying 1070/1080/Ti's. Some people are starting to mine with Nvidia GPUs too.

This is where reality kicks in. AMD does not, I repeat does not have the R&D to spend on graphics, in return you get what you see. Shit if they can match 1080ti at 300 watt, that would be a miracle and a leap for them. I always ask people keep their expectations in check. This is the very reason they are a year behind, because their entire focus has been Zen. When zen got closer to launch, it was clear graphics cards are gonna have to wait. Doesn't help them sticking with HBM2.

Granted I would love to see AMD sore past Nvidia just to watch some keyboard warriors disappear, however I don't expect anything mindblowing as Ryzen is definitely AMDs prime focus for the remainder of the year. And the theory on driver issues does look very plausible especially if they did infact incorporate some of Navi tech into Vega and the timeframe for launch. Ofcourse HBM2 inventory could also be the dragging weight but seems the previous theory still holds water.

Purple purple purple go odurple quadraduubl jargon nonsense is all I read. There is no rumors in this thread just one big ass argument about amd and Nividia and who has the bigger flesh rod in their tighty whities.... nerd raging over a damn video card lmao

Not really a new segment, just a unique need for developers on par with Titan. It basically is a gaming card, but released in advance of the actual product. Makes sense with new architectures and AMDs push to attract developers.

Marketing probably had to come up with something. Performance is irrelevant in that market. The point is to get the architecture and optimize for it. Power connectors interesting as devs could be using risers and swapping cards with limited development boxes. With 8 high stacks of HBM2 having even worse thermal issues, 300+ watts would be rather difficult to obtain.

Ok that makes sense, basically AMD Titan X version which the Fury failed to do on the previous generation. How much will 8GB of HBM2 save on power over 16GB? Any idea?

Looks like the 8GB (2x) are almost at full speed at 480gb/sec. I wonder if the 4GB (2x) stacks will be at full speed for the fastest gaming card?

While AMD doesn't have the money for R&D, your understanding of large manufacturing business is lacking. The release of one product line is completely independent of another. Zen in no way affects how Radeon Graphics are handled as they are two separate divisions. In fact Radeon has two teams. One working on the current generation, and another working almost entirely independently on the next gen.

Zen might affect their long term budget, but nothing short term like you are implying. To add and pull resources half-assed is deadly to any businesses productivity (Frederick Brooks realized this back in the 70's, due to training curves). And all good executives know this. This is why execs sometimes sit on their hands when they get a pile of cash because they don't want to commit to a bunch of new resources when they might need that money in the future.

So in short, any delays of Vega is completely independent of anything going on with Zen right now. This assumes there is no manufacturing constraint at the fab causing issues. And far as I can tell they are all running up to speed.
