NVIDIA using bad SDR Monitor Image Settings to Showcase HDR?

Always thought those early comparison pictures with monitors side by side looked highly suspicious, pretty underhanded of Nvidia if intentional.

And this surprises you? Like Charter advertising their 100 MBPS internet and comparing it to AT&T 6MBPS DSL. It's advertising. It's always been this way and always will.

Not sure I really agree with this guy's criticisms of the two images, the sun should be by far the brightest point and it should be much brighter on a HDR panel than in the SDR image.... and it's basically impossible to actually judge these two images based on a youtube video, but in general even after they changed the settings the HDR image did appear to have much darker blacks/shadows and brighter highlights.

In any case it's an early prototype running one of the very first games to support HDR, so it's probably not gonna be perfect, and it's not at all surprising that Nvidia would tweak settings so that things look more different on a show floor, after all you aren't gonna be using these things under those lighting conditions in the home. It doesn't change the fact that the Nvidia HDR spec monitors, even if not displaying HDR content, have much higher brightness and much better black levels than any other LCD because they use full array local dimming on their backlights.

They are just better displays even if you aren't using HDR. And HDR is just software that allows you to have more dynamic range in an image, how that is used is up to the game developer and will be different game to game, so complaining about Mass Effect Andromeda's exposure choices and saying that reflects on HDR is just as dishonest as changing monitor settings.
