GPU recommendation for 1440p?

Hello,

I have been out of the hardware scene for a while now. I have a Core i7-3770k LGA1155 CPU and 16GB of RAM running on an Asus Maximus Formula V mainboard.

I recently purchased a Dell U3415W (3440x1440 native resolution) and was wanting confirmation that a GTX 1070 or 1080 would work for me. I enjoy gaming and also do a lot of productivity work. I also have two Dell U2412 displays (total of 3) hooked up to this system. Currently using an ATI Radeon 7970 GPU.

Would the GTX1070 or 1080 be limited by processor at all? (I am assuming no, but this is an older gen i7). I am not necessarily looking to run the game on all 3 screens (I know multiple GPU would likely be required for that).

I just want to know if the 1070 or 1080 would fit my needs best to run newer games on the primary U3415W at native resolution in high/ultra settings? Older games I am sure would run fine...of course some games won't support that resolution natively so I am aware I may have to modify settings in each game for UltraWide.

Thank you!

I have the same monitor, and I'd recommend the 1080. 3440x1440 isn't quite 4k, but in terms of GPU power, it falls between standard 2560x1440p and a 4k screen. So with a single 1080 you should be able to push 60fps in almost any game. With a 1070, you'd probably get there in quite a few games, but not the more demanding ones without backing off the detail.

I've had very few problems with game support for 21:9, at worst you have to tweak an ini file. Most games will support it without any problems these days.

You're probably OK on the CPU for now, but I'd put that on my list for the next thing to upgrade.

I'm happy running a GTX1080 on my little old i5-2500k. You'll be great with the card.

I have 980's in SLI with an Acer X34, but I'm holding out for the 1080ti

I would day it depends. Running bleeding-edge AAA titles? With an ultra wide I'd say 1080. but you'll pay a large premium over the 1070.

Thanks all...I think I am going to go with the 1070. I am not needing to run bleeding edge AAA titles and it is at the price point I feel is good for my needs. Appreciate the input and help.

I have that exact monitor U3415W, the 1070 does great for most games on Ultra or highest settings but will be games where you may need to turn down settings. Now depending how picky you are with frame rates, tearing etc. since this is not a Gsync monitor you might consider the 1080 or Titan X but should be fine in most cases. I am thinking about going SLI more for the fun of it then anything else and to lock that monitor for games supporting SLI to 60hz using adaptive sync. which to me is the only Vsync tech that works for me without excessive lag. Anyways the 1070 is indeed a powerful card in the end

1080 SLi if you want 100 fps gaming. Otherwise even a single 1080 would do.

Tried Division, Ass Creed Syndicate, ROTTR, BF1 maxed out? 120+ fps in those games is unpossible.

true division only gets average of about 75 and same with tomb raider. BF1 maxed at 1440p with my 1080 is absolutely 120+

Depends on the map and what is going on screen. I am not seeing 120+ in BF1 with a single card since DICE cooked SLi.
Maybe your AA is low or something or maybe because I am on DX11.

Check out my signature. I have a 3770k @ 4.7 GHz and it works like a charm with with 3440x1440 gaming. It keeps up really nicely with my SLI 980Ti's - much better than the 3570k it replaced.

I find that I really need SLI to be working to max out games at this resolution. BF1 and Witcher 3 have been the most demanding and they run beautifully. I know a 1080 is a little faster than a 980Ti, so you might be okay with just one for most games, but if you want fluid performance you may really want to consider two of them. A single 1070 probably won't get the job done.

I am in a similar situation as OP, same CPU/ram, Asus p8Z77-v Pro, running a Dell U2711 (2560x1440). Been out of the loop for a few years and looking for upgrade advice. Currently running 2 GTX Titan's in sli (2013) and having recently bought witcher 3 from the steam sale, these cards just don't cut it anymore. Which makes me a bit sad, they've been really good to me :p

My goal is to max out W3 @ 60fps and have some upgrade headroom for the future. is there a single card can help me accomplish that? (not named titan x pascal)

GTX 1080 is your answer. It's already more powerful than your 2 Titans in SLI, and is currently the 1440p buy, since the TXP is for folks trying to reach 4k60.

That, or you wait for the 1080ti, though I suspect it's going to be fairly close to $1000. Or they drop the 1080's price to $500, then make the 1080ti $800.

TI/Titan. My 980TI at 1500 mhz structures with several games to maintain 120hz

ignore noob above that says 2 titans are slower than a 1080. 980ti/titan OC is like 80-90% IIRC a 1080 OC.

980TI was a great deal when going for 300-400 bucks but doubt they are that cheap still. If they are grab one or wait for 1080TI. No point in a 1080 this late in the year.

Did you not notice that the guy said he has 2 2013 Titans (OG), and not TXMs?

'Noob', my foot.
