Question about Radeon HD 6850 supporting 4K and 2K at 60Hz

Usually I upgrade my computer every 4 years or so I figure my i7 2600k is still running strong so there's no need for upgrade for another year or two. My primary desktop specification is listed in my signature. I am running Windows 10 64bits

Anyway so I just purchased an Acer B286HK UHD monitor that can support a maximum of 4K at 60Hz.

I tried to connect it via DisplayPort and DVI using Radeon HD 6850.
For DisplayPort, I can get up to 4K resolution but I can only get the refresh rate to set at maximum of 30Hz
For DVI, I can get up to 2K resolution but refresh rate is also capped at 30Hz.

My assumption is my Radeon HD 6850 is couple generations old. I bought it in 2012 and it wasn't a high end card back then so it simply doesn't support running 4K or 2K at 60Hz.

Can someone please confirm my assumption? I couldn't find much information on the Internet regarding with this matter.

On a side note, my laptop has a display port and I was able to get resolution and refresh rate to be set at 4K or 2K at 60hz.

The DVI standard has been unmaintained for 10 years. It caps out at 2560x1600 resolution, no matter what.

But normally DisplayPort 1.2 and above should be able to handle 60Hz UHD resolution fine...but AMD gimped the pixel clock in the 6850 such that it can only process 3840x2160 at 45Hz before it tops out.

Thanks for your information. Looks like I need a new video card.

I am aware of that DVI can only support at maximum 2K resolution. I just didn't know if it can support refresh rate at 60Hz. My understanding is that it should as long as both video card and monitor supports dual-link DVI.

You may also need a dual link cable. IIRC they have more pins and better shielding.

FWIW I had a 6850 paired with an i5 2500K, and I recently upgraded to a Sapphire Nitro RX 480. I don't know if you are playing games, but the performance difference has been huge between the two cards. So you should probably upgrade your video card.
